If anyone had an excuse to say "But Harry Potter was my whole childhood," it was Radcliffe. And he knew the trans community was more important.

I met Dan Radcliffe once. It was in 2018 when he was in “The Lifespan of a Fact” on Broadway. After the show, my mom and I went with so many other people to the stage door to get the program signed. He not only signed my program, but took a photo with me. He very gently pointed out that my mom’s finger was over the camera lens for the first shot or two she took, and then was happy to stand for a couple more seconds while she figured it out. We were by no means the only people there, and yet I saw him demonstrate the same kindness to everyone in line, all after performing an entire play. I will never forget that experience.

Second comment but the "you owe loyalty to JRK because she made your career" stuff is really giving "you should love your parents unconditionally because they gave birth to you".

Daniel Radcliffe lives up to the "Rad" in his name

he’s in musical theatre ofc he’s a trans ally love him

The amount of people still saying things like "JKR is a feminist, she's trying to protect ALL women, she doesn't hate trans women!" like... she SELF-IDENTIFIES as a TERF, my guy

It's essential, for me, to remember that Daniel Radcliffe started uplifting LGBTQIA+ people when he was barely 20 years old, and hasn't faltered in his support since--even while he himself was going through some serious personal issues (alcoholism, coping with the insane level of fame the films brought him, etc)

I'm not queer myself, but I have the basic understanding that queer people of all stripes deserve the same standard of dignity and safety as me.

My GOAT Daniel Radcliffe. He got his Harry Potter money and basically managed to not be remembered for it.

Not to diminish the importance of Harry Potter for Daniel Radcliffe's career but to be completely frank, I feel like he's more than proven he has the chops to stay in the business regardless. Like his range and talent have taken him a lot further than a washed up old biddy who has mold in her castle.
Amended for correction, thanks!

i really don't like this framing that daniel radcliffe owes jkr for his career. he was an 8 year old boy and extremely talented. the HP franchise was lucky to have found him.

As a transgender man and an old millennial who was a tween when the Harry Potter series first hit the US, I cannot stress enough how happy I am that the original main three actors for the movie series vehemently support the existence and happiness of myself and others like me. Plus, I absolutely adore all of the bizarre and amazing roles that Daniel Radcliffe has taken on since his breakthrough role as the horrible transphobic woman's main character.

What terrifies me the most about the rise of transphobia is the normalisation.
That minority who make it their life's work to give us hell whenever they can are not what scares me...
It's people "growing tired of the whining" that upsets me.
So many people think there's no issue.
"Everything's quiet so what are you whining about?"
Conveniently forgetting that all of our rights have been stripped away.
We're currently in a position where speaking out tends to be met with grudging acceptance at best.
Until the media speak up and give us REAL support, until the message is out that things are NOT right, we will be stuck in this silent torture forever!

Celebrities speaking out for minorities against other people with big platforms is SO SO WELCOMED with open arms. It gives me so much hope to see things like this (especially pedro pascal my goat) and just makes being on social media just a little better.

IIRC it was Maggie Smith who was responsible for Daniel Radcliffe’s success. They’d previously acted together in a BBC production of David Copperfield and when the casting folks for the Harry Potter films were struggling to find a Harry, she suggested Daniel Radcliffe. With that connection and recommendation, he was bound to be a star!

When it comes to J.K.Rowling and Harry Potter this is what Ursula K. Le Guin has said:
“I read it to find out what the fuss was about, and remained somewhat puzzled; it seemed a lively kid’s fantasy crossed with a school novel, good fare for its age group, but stylistically ordinary, imaginatively derivative, and ethically rather mean-spirited.”

As someone who has trans and nonbinary friends, I am glad to see Allies showing up everywhere to state the obvious: that they are people and deserve to be treated as such.

Not only was Dan in movies and stage plays before Harry Potter, he has public said that he doesn’t particularly enjoy being famous.
I think if he hadn’t taken the Harry Potter role, he might have just stuck to stage plays.

I loved the one you did on David Tennant, he's such a lovely person. Glad to see you covering Daniel Radcliffe!
