YES is the quintessential progressive rock band and "Owner of a Lonely Heart" was not really the norm for YES, if they had a "norm". This is far more representative of their discography.
This has always been what I call a buckle up song, because you're about to go on a brilliant musical ride. The 70's had countless such songs, it was a great time to be alive!
This did get radio play... FM radio, that is. You'll need to listen to this song several times before you get a good handle on it - and you'll hear something new each time for many years to come.
Shoutout to Roger Dean, the brilliant artist of this and many other album covers, fine art, posters and prints. His amazing talent vastly contributed to the rich (and super groovy) visual culture of the 70s.
There are very few bands that I can listen to for years never mind decades; Yes is one of those bands. This never gets old and sounds as fresh now as it did over 50 years ago. The musicianship, composition, and production are simply amazing. There are few bands that can claim to have master musicians at every instrument. Howe, guitar; Wakeman, keys; Squire, bass; Bruford, drums; and Anderson vocals have always been revered as some of the best at their respective instruments. No wonder why Yes was massively popular with so many great songs, a very deep rabbit hole.
Close to the Edge..28 minutes of chaos, beauty and creative genius! The cutting edge of progressive rock! No one had EVER done anything like this before! YES at its creative best!!
