Joey Jordison was an American drummer, songwriter, guitarist, and founding member of Slipknot from Iowa. Known to Slipknot fans as #1, Joey became one of the most recognizable and influential metal drummers of his generation. His combination of speed, precision, aggression, creativity, and unforgettable stage presence helped define the early Slipknot sound.
“Disasterpiece” is one of the standout tracks from Slipknot’s brutal 2001 album Iowa. Joey’s drumming is a huge part of what makes this song hit so hard—from the relentless double bass and rapid transitions to the crushing grooves underneath Corey Taylor’s vocals and the band’s chaotic wall of sound.
In this reaction, we’re focusing on what made Joey Jordison such a monster behind the kit. His drumming wasn’t just about playing FAST. Joey had an incredible ability to combine technical playing with groove, feel, aggression, and musicality. Even during the most chaotic sections, his playing helped hold Slipknot’s massive sound together.
🥁 JOEY JORDISON LEGACY
Joey’s musical career went far beyond Slipknot. He co-founded Murderdolls, later launched Scar the Martyr and VIMIC, and played with the extreme-metal project Sinsaenum.
His résumé also includes some incredible connections with other major rock and metal artists. Joey performed with Metallica at Download Festival in 2004, toured with Ministry in 2006 and Korn in 2007, worked and toured with Rob Zombie, and also performed with Satyricon.
That is one seriously impressive metal résumé.
Joey Jordison passed away in 2021, but his influence continues through the music, performances, musicians he inspired, and generations of drummers who still study what he did behind the kit.
