How Memes Killed The Normal Elevator

Hola mis amigos!

There is a golden rule that every successful Roblox game must obey: give the player a purpose. But in 2015, one developer on Roblox decided to build a game with no goals and absolutely no point. Instead of standard mechanics, they built their entire world out of a fragile foundation: internet memes.

This is the tragic story of how the viral comedy that built an empire became the exact thing that destroyed The Normal Elevator. I dive into the secret history of its developer, NowDoTheHarlemShake, the accidental launch, the legendary 2016 golden age, and the slow decay caused by the dead internet humor in the game.

im glad harlem didnt add modern brainrot shit. it is a time capsule of early to mid 2010s internet culture and it should stay that way.

"It's either you die a Normal Elevator, or live long enough to see yourself become an Adopt me!"

In 2017-2018(When I played this game) I didn't know English, like at all, cause I'm not from English-speaking country. But this game was still funny. I miss this time. I loved shoop da woop

Roblox players are ppl that needs dopamine emotes, umpossible badges, tryhards and competition to make a game adictive :sob:

i mean all games have to go at some point i think the normal elevator dying after 4 to 8 years of being semi viral or consistently ok is amazing

Seeing the perspective of people who actually understood the meaning of the jokes is kinda weird, for me (a kid who didn't understand english and internet culture at time), these events was just a bunch of random things happening simultaneously, with no meaning whatsover

That was actually one of the first games I played on Roblox back in 2017
kind of mixed feelings
I wish Roblox would've still had legacy lighting to experience the game properly.

I hope you make a video discussing the games inspired by The Normal Elevator and starting the elevator genre as a whole. Obviously Regretevator is the most well known, but even there were games prior to it's existence. The Chill Elevator, The Scary Elevator, The , the list goes on. They're also time capsule of themselves, with the exception of Regretevator who frequently updates.
