In this overnight backpacking trip we kick things off with a quick intro, then head down the trail to check out a dam. After scoping it out we decide to turn around, set up camp, grab a snack, and jump in for a swim at the dam.
Later we collect firewood, head back to camp, brew some tea, cook dinner, and keep a big fire going deep into the night. We wake up the next morning, eat breakfast, and hike out.
Simple overnight backpacking — no fancy gear flexing, just trail time, cold water, camp food, and a solid fire.

I ended up crashing into a tree in an uncontrolled wipe out at full speed. I was lucky that the only body part that hit was my knee but, that knee wrapped around the tree in the opposite direction as it bends. Believe me, you have no idea of the sort of pain I experienced on that fateful day. Had you been there you would have heard a 13 year old screaming every obscenity known to mankind on that slope that day!
But despite the broken leg (in multiple areas) as well as torn muscles and ligaments, I was VERY lucky even though I had to relearn how to walk on that leg 4 months later. I say "lucky" because a split second either way of that uncontrolled wipe out and it could have easily have been my head or my back that hit that tree instead ... and BOOM! ... there goes my life.
Paralyzation or living as a vegetable forever, not to mention my life cut incredibly short. And, just like diving into a lake or river, it was completely avoidable. And this is a warning to all young people: life is precious. Always stray on the side of caution and also ask yourself, "what is the worst thing that can happen here?" And then check to make sure it CANNOT happen before you try doing anything in that situation. I believe it's called "situational awareness" and it's what drives all human thinking once that skill is developed.
