Short version: If you guess at any given moment that the Admiral Kuznetsov is on fire you have a shocking good chance at being correct.

It impresses me how much mileage Simon has gotten out of making fun of this ship. Maybe he could put it on the Places channel, since it doesn't move anymore.

You forgot that when it broke down going to the Mediterranean for the Syrian  operation, they asked Spain to go to a port to fix it and they got a denial from Spain saying that the ship was too much of an environmental hazard for the port

Russia’s insistence on keeping this ship alive really shows how much symbolism still matters to them.

A friend in the US Navy says " The Kuznetsov really is the perfect flagship for Russia. It very visibly demonstrates both their ambition and capability, how they want to be seen and how they really are."

The reason the Kuznetsov is still in service isn't because it's still working but for the fact they can't replace it and Russia refuses to be embarrassed by having to retire their only aircraft carrier

Simon left out the best parts.  It was transferred to the port of Murmansk despite the fact that the port can't supply enough electricity or water from the shore.  Instead of adding that capacity to the port, the ships engines were run 24/7 for decades which means they are now essentially worn out.
But all of this discussion is academic because the crew was transferred to the Naval Infantry and sent to Ukraine.

Last time I was this early the Moskva wasn't a submarine yet

I find it really funny that they have fire trucks parked on the flight deck, which means that the ship itself doesn't have sufficient firefighting systems installed to put out fires.

A ship that’s breaks down so much, it has two dedicated tugboats that drag old videos about it back from deletion.

The fact that both China and India operate former Russian carriers with a high degree of effectiveness is the biggest clue as to the reason for the Kuznetsov being an endless source of derision. India's carrier is even older; being one of the Kuznetsov's predecessor's, and yet both nations have used their Soviet left-overs as templates for native designs. So clearly the problem is not the core design, it's Russia (Big surprise...)
But there's a delicious irony of a carrier originally built in Ukraine hanging around costing money and consuming resources from Russia that can't then be used as part of the war in Ukraine. The Kuznetsov's existence probably serves Ukraine better than it serves Russia. And long may she continue to aid the nation that built her.

What's slow, smokes like hell, and carries 10 aircraft?

A Soviet aircraft carrier designed to carry 20 AIRCRAFT!

Two things not mentioned: 1. At the fall of the Soviet Union, the ship technically belonged to Ukraine, but a Russian officer with a skeleton crew "appropriated" it by sailing away from its Ukrainian dock at the 11th hour without permission from port authorities. 2. The drydock sinking incident occurred because there was a power failure, causing the pumps that kept the water discharging from the drydock to fail. There were backup generators that should have kept disaster from occurring, but someone had stolen all the diesel fuel for the generators and sold it on the black market. Deceit and corruption are hallmarks of Russian failures.

Russia could've built 4 smaller helicopter carriers that could easily be converted to drone carriers for the amount of resources wasted on trying to have an aircraft carrier.

Last time i was this early the Kusnetzov could sail under its own power. 😂

“So, how will we launch the planes, a cool catapult “?

“Better…do you know who Tony Hawk is”?

The tugboats really are the primary propulsion system.

I was in the Navy at this time.  I remember getting a briefing on the construction of the ship from one of our Intelligence Specialists.  Everyone started laughing because he mispronounced the name.  It came out as "Cuts Nuts Off" 😂

I tale of two navies. I was in the USN and served aboard a guided missile cruiser back in the 1980s. While in port in Pakistan, there was a Russian ship there at the same time, a Svedlove class, I think. We had the chance to go aboard their ship, and they came onto ours. The differences were so striking that both groups of sailors, theirs and ours, were completely astonished. We were astonished by the complete lack of damage control equipment, lack of regular maintenance, fire hazards such as wood pannelling in the p-ways, and that the ship had a bar on it, and that sailors can regularly drink even on duty, so long as they remain fit for duty. There was also a major lack of training aboard the ship, and it was filthy.
They were astonished by the total opposite.
We came away thinking that their ship was a firetrap waiting to explode, and they came away thinking that our ship looked cold and utilitarian.
I still would rather be on one of ours. At least I have a good chance of surviving a deployment.
