"Our tanks are too large for the bridges and they are overly complicated to repair."
"What if we made them...bigger and more complex?"

They’re called wonder weapons because you wonder why they thought they were a good idea.

point of order: the leader of the Luftwaffe, Herman Goring, wasn't a crackhead - he was a morphine addict

I once read a memoir of a German soldier who was captured by the Americans at Normandy and taken down to the beach to be shipped off. He remarked at the unimaginable amount of matérial the Americans were unloading, but was also struck by the fact there were no horses, everything was mechanized.

Omar Bradley: "Amateurs talk strategy. Professionals talk logistics."

The actual wonder weapon of WW2 was the proximity fuse. It was the closest thing to an IRL cheat code and was so secret that they didn't even tell the gunners firing it that they were using them. They all thought they just suddenly got REALLY good at hitting enemy planes.

35:25 to quote Clint Smith "they couldn't hear the ping. You just fired 8 rounds of 30-06. Everyone is deaf"

Tactics is understanding that a King Tiger in the right place is unbeatable, strategy is realizing you can just drop a bomb on it from a plane, logistics is when you wonder why they even bothered to build one in the first place

"it didn't technically dissolve its pilots"

Title of one of Simon's videos: "the Nazi jet that dissolved its pilots!"

It's still often unappreciated that weapon systems don't win wars. Logistics do.

"Turns out that submarine manufacturing is just a little bit complicated. Who knew?!"

Stockton Rush sure didn't.

Friend of mine is a tank nut. He once joked: How do you fight a Panther? You don't. You wait until it stops workig on it's own. 😬

When people go on about the wonder weapons they always conveniently forget that the Allies weapon development didn't just stop.

Amphetamines evidently did quite well, some would say they’re not a super weapon, my mate Gary would disagree

My uncle died in his 90s just a few years ago. He was a country boy from Wisconsin in Patton's 3rd army. He talked about how shocked they were when they saw how much of the German logistics was done with horses

The scary part aren't the "experts" who listen to the propaganda and thus can't seem to understand why the Nazis lost. The scary part is that way too many of these people seem disappointed.

Yes -the German military actually used more horses overall during World War II than during World War I.

Turns out the V2 was Werner Von Braun's linkedin audition for NASA.
I call that a win.

Fun fact: many models of German artillery pieces at least initially had wheels not suited for motorized towing, only for being drawn by horses. Some of them had to have new models of metal wheels added in new variants, to make them suitable for towing by motorized vehicles such as wheeled trucks, or wheeled, halftracked or tracked artillery tractors.

The intelligence countermeasure was to feed the Nazi reports saying that the V 1 and 2 were overshooting, so they moved the targeting so they fell short of London
