Anthony Hopkins Is Absolutely CHILLING | FIRST TIME WATCHING The Silence of the Lambs

Shenanigans Reacts

There is something uniquely terrifying about a villain who barely needs to raise his voice.

This is my first time watching The Silence of the Lambs, and the psychological battle between Clarice Starling and Hannibal Lecter had me completely fascinated. Jodie Foster is incredible as Clarice, and Anthony Hopkins manages to make practically every conversation with Hannibal feel dangerous.

Between the investigation, Buffalo Bill, and Clarice trying to navigate Hannibal's mind games, the tension in this movie just never lets up. I can absolutely understand why this became such an iconic psychological thriller.

Please keep the comments spoiler free for anyone who has not experienced The Silence of the Lambs yet, as well as any related Hannibal stories I have not seen.

Chianti is a wine. Dry, red, Italian. Apparently goes well with fava beans and liver according to Dr. Lecter.

“Three hots and a cot” mean three hot meals and a real bed. We used that term in the military. For us, it was a comparison between being in the field and being stationed back in garrison.

The funeral home doubles as a morgue, presumably to indicate what a remote town this is. The funeral and the examination of the body are separate events in the same place.

"Hey Farva what's the name of that restaurant you like with all the goofy shit on the walls and the mozzarella sticks?"

It should be noted that Clarice flirted back with the bug guy and was invited to her graduation ceremony.

Fun fact: Sir Anthony Hopkins went to see the premiere in a theatre. He sat on the furthest row, behind everyone else. When the film ended, he asked the audience if they enjoyed it. In his Hannibal Lecter voice, obviously. Legends say many bricks were shat that day.

Fun fact 2: In his very first scene, Lecter drew a bunch of pictures from the Belvedere. Buffalo Bill lived in "Belvedere", Ohio. Maybe Hannibal knew all along and was hinting at it.

(there's a lot more fun facts about this film, but I'll stop now)

In rural counties, the local funeral director would also be the county medical examiner. The same basic equipment is necessary for both performing the autopsy & embalming for the funeral. I was a private investigator for several criminal defense law firms, it was common for law enforcement, etc. to apply Vick's Vapor Rub under your nostril to mask the smell of decomp.

They took inspiration from several serial killers for Buffalo Bill's character, including Ted Bundy and Ed Gein. Great reaction.

There’s nothing better than watching Lecter and Clarice interacting with each other and Lecter really becoming intrigued and then enamored with her. Like he says in the end he has no plans to call on her because the world is a more interesting place with her in it. She never had to worry that he might come for her. I bet that was a big relief. Lol

The skinning humps quote was a reference to the historic buffalo bill who needlessly killed 1000’s of bison. Old cowboy reference from cops, surprise.

The very definition of a thriller, not a horror.

10:17 Chianti is an Italian red wine from Tuscany, made mainly from Sangiovese grapes.

Anthony Hopkins is a brilliant actor. I highly recommend the 1983 movie The Bounty where he plays Captain Bligh with Mel Gibson as Fletcher Christian. There are also a couple of now A-list actors in it in very early roles. One of my favourite movies of all time!
