Ibrahim Traoré went on Burkina Faso's national television 3 days before his 4th anniversary in power and warned the Alliance of Sahel States that the "black winter" he predicted in December 2025 is only beginning. Then he said something bigger: Burkina Faso is preparing its army, its reservists and its new defence industry for wars beyond the fight against armed groups already on its soil.
In this episode, Frontline Africa looks at what Traoré actually said and what gives those words their weight: the April attacks in Mali that killed the defence minister, the August mutiny at air base 101 in Niamey, the European Parliament resolution, the ICC exit, and his own admission that the AES unified force is not yet a fully autonomous force. We also look at the 100,000 reservists, the patriotic immersion camps, the AES bank and the 500 billion CFA question, the new constitution with no date, and why a viral clip of Traoré saying he "already has the map of his enemies" has Pan-African YouTube talking.
Who is Traoré preparing to fight? Can the 3 AES countries fight together right now? And is he asking too much from the Burkinabè people before results arrive?

Traoré says Burkina Faso is preparing for bigger wars. I want your honest view on three questions:
1⃣ What is the biggest threat to the AES: armed groups on the ground, or a neighbour backed by outside powers? Who might be on Traoré’s “map of enemies”?
2⃣ What should the AES prioritize: a unified force with aircraft and logistics, or the roads and rail links that would bind the three countries together?
3⃣ Are 100,000 reservists, patriotic immersion and a new constitution what a revolution at war requires—or is too much being asked of the Burkinabè people?
Answer one or all three. Let’s have a serious discussion in the comments.
