Ibrahim Traoré has done it again. On September 9, Burkina Faso inaugurated TEXFORCES-BF near Bobo-Dioulasso, a textile complex that takes Burkinabè cotton from raw fibre to finished uniforms, T-shirts, socks and fabric, all under one roof. The first customer is the Burkinabè military. The money came from national savings, not the IMF or Paris. The first workers include widows and orphans of people who died defending the country.

In this episode, Frontline Africa explains what has been built, who works there, where the money came from, and why a military uniform can be the start of an entire African industry. We look at the African paradox: we grow the cotton, we export it raw, and we buy back the finished clothes at 20 times the price while our rich people flex imported labels. We trace the Sankara connection, the pattern from tomatoes to gold to cotton, the possibility of Mali and Niger as the next customers, and the one thing Traoré himself says will decide whether this factory grows: electricity.

Should African defence budgets be required to build African industry? Which product does your country import that it already grows the raw material for? Tell us in the comments.
