DESCENDERS: The Makers or the Breakers of Teyvat (Genshin Impact Lore Analysis)

Nameless Explorer

22,491 views

And yet I happen to create a 40-minute long video once again... hopefully, I'm not way too late with this one even though it's already past Luna IV.

Throughout December, I happen to look at several lore videos once again and Minsleif's brief theory about Dottore struck me. Ever since, I became more intrigued about Descenders because how can such a group of exceptional individuals be such a big deal in the wider scope of Teyvat's narrative?

Where do they actually play into here?

What is their exact role in the story?

Luckily, we are already at the point of the game's story where we have less ideas to speculate with and start to piece things together based on more certain implicit givens in the story. So sit back and enjoy the new Lore in Explore!

DISCLAIMER: This is not purely a lore credibility video; my intent for this video is to explore ideas and perspectives as well as making sense of the logic of the story or the lore material being presented. If you seek correctness and accuracy of information and lore, then I'm afraid this video wouldn't satisfy such a demand.

Pretty sure Khaenri'ah was being built back before Sal Vindagnyr fell. The Sal Vindagnyr scribe Ukko's notes talked about people creating a "new nation without gods"

@lathamtk 8 months ago

Khaenriah was founded by some of the survivors of Hyperborea, or at least some of the survivors of Hyperborea went to a very very early Khaenriah and helped build it up. I think that was around the time the very first Divine Nail dropped? I think Hyperborea got Nailed first.

11:51 Pohjola is an Island in Nod-Krai. It's written in the game files.

31:51 - Though there are a few exceptions like Citlali, also I can't remember if Neuvilette was previously aware of Descenders of not during that one dialogue exchange, which is mildly interesting that the Dragons may not have had a name for the world altering beings. (Also just a fair they could've had a different name for them but then I assume Neuvilette would've said something like "Ah I understand, in our culture we referred to such beings as [Whatever Title]."

14:07 Yes, we knew this since V1.2

It's been a month since this video, and people have got their hands on the lore of the moon glider. Which tells a story about what is presumably Belyi Tsar Saarelainen the Third Descender and Tsaritsa finding the gates of Pohjola somewhere around Irminsul, and also shining some light on Belyi Tsar's motivation.
(I recommend not spending too much time thinking of exact location description - it is a reference to classic Russian fairy tales, where Koshei the Deathless's death is hidden really well)

Was that FMA Brotherhood music in the background at the 15-16m mark or does Genshin have something very similar!?

I was Always under the Impression that nibelung created teyvat, as i think it was implied that He created the moon's.

@PixelMochi 8 months ago

There has never been any talks of a second Descender. It's always been referred to as The Second Who Came, and that is Nibelung. He follows the same criteria of being able to reshape Teyvat, especially after having brought the Abyss to it, which is why he was never called a Descender.

25:35 well well well, the dev spoiled it

@thelastyaksha 1 month ago

32:26 I think the reason why the abyss sibling isn't a descender is very obvious. According to Nahida, she's appeared in Khaenriah for the first time and stayed there for a long time. Descender are aliens who come to "Teyvat" and Khaenriah isn't Teyvat.

Spoilers for Nod-Krai AQ Act 8-

When we meet the Moon Sisters, they mentioned that when the 1st Descender arrived initially, it seems he came in peacefully and was treated as a "Guest" but then took full advantage of that. I am glad this was mentioned because I did wonder how that first battle started and it was pretty much through trickery.

The Hilichurl curse and the Curse of Immortality are definitely different. Hilichurls still die and Dain, Thrain, and Pierro are all cursed with Immortality, yet not Hilichurls.

The relation to irmunsul record is entirely assumtion. We have no reason to think other people cant also be unaffected by irmunsul.

I would very much assume Skirk wouldn't be called "belonging to this world". And she would likely be unaffected by irmunsul.
We also know that alice is unaffected. But she isn't a decender

So that connection is very shakey at best. "A will to rival a world" is the only distinction we have between other outlanders and decenders. They might all not be effected by irmunsul.

The Idea of the Fourth Descender’s Twin trying to Control Their Sibling’s Fate through the Abyss DOESN’T Sit Right with Me, It has been Implied that the Traveling Twins operated on the basis of Absolute Equality; They treated each other as Equals, they Had Equal Say in all Decisions, they Had Equal Standing with Each Other, They Treated Each Other as Equals, up until Khaenrhi’ah, NOW The Twin Treats Their Sibling (Fourth Descender) as a Subordinate of Lower Status…
