Gotta give you props on the potatoes.. Last year, I experimented with my potato spacing after watching some of your videos.. I planted a row of Kennebec and a row of Pontiac Red with my normal 12" spacing between plants, and another row of each where I basically laid the seed potatoes end to end in the trenches with no space between them.. My rows were exactly 50' long.. I used just over 5lbs of seed potatoes in the rows spaced at 12" and I used just over 10# in the rows with no spacing.. The Kennebecs gave me 80lbs in the spaced row and 150lbs in the unspaced row.. The Red Pontiac gave me 90lbs in the spaced row and 210lbs in the unspaced row.. This year, I planted all of my potatoes with no space between the plants.. I went from planting 6 rows every year down to only three rows this year.. Saved me a bunch of work and a bunch of space..

I finally had a good tater harvest! What you said before about frequent shallow watering in well drained soil made something click in my brain and it finally happened for me. I’m gonna reserve near all of em for seed for my big boy tater patch in August. Thanks for all your help over the years Travis.

You have taught me how to grow taters. Now I’m showing others how to do it and sending them to your channel for in depth knowledge! Thank you again and again.

I was going to plant asparagus in our 3.5' x 6' raised beds next year. Now you've gone and wrecked that plan!
I'll have to buy more beds!🤣

Always enjoy watching. Looking forward to my first potato harvest this year, they just started flowering so it won’t be too long now

I did an experiment this year where I planted the same varieties of taters in grow bags and in the ground. What I've seen so far is that the grow bags produced less but larger taters, and in ground produced more but smaller. Not sure why unless it's soil compaction. Grow bags were planted 25 February, in ground planted 11 March. I'm in Pensacola, FL for reference.

One last thing, after the vines die let the potatoes sit in ground for 2 - 3 weeks to set skin. Thin skin potatoes are easily damaged as anyone can tell when digging new potatoes and just rubbing the skin it comes off. When potatoes set skin is also when it turns from a new potato to just a potato and the sugars quickly start converting to starch.

I had close to a 10x multiple this year too. Thanks to advice like this form you travis. I did have my Adirondacks decimated by some kind of nematode but the pink ones were beautifully bug free. Thanks again Travis.

@Maria-ql3fc 1 year ago

Congrats Travis, I was pretty sure you'd get the 10+ multiple. I planted the Baltic Rose and the Yukon Gem in February and now I can safely say the Baltic Rose is my new favorite tater.

The bumps are ''lenticles'' they are from overley wet conditions or humid conditions once in storage, the are pores like in our skin basically and because its too wet they enlarge

I Planted one 20 ft. row of Russets, three 20 ft. rows of white Kennebecs and three 20 ft. rows of Yukon Golds. The Russets gave 12 lbs., the Kennebecs had 44 lbs. and the Yukon Gold had 46 lbs. The russets were just kitchen potatoes that sprouted and were not very big. The Kennebecs were the best as far as size. Got a lot of big ones.
