🥔Everyone Had an Opinion... Now We Have Results!

Down-Home Backyard Gardening

For months, gardeners have been following along with the potato tower experiment, sharing advice, opinions, encouragement, and plenty of debate along the way. Well, the wait is finally over! 🥔 In this video, we're harvesting the potato tower and taking a look at the final results. But that's not all—we're also digging into potatoes grown in a cardboard box experiment and even checking on a few pantry potatoes that found their way into the garden.

Did the potato tower live up to the hype? Was the cardboard box method worth trying? And what happened with those forgotten pantry potatoes? Today, we finally get the answers.

Join me as we uncover the harvest, compare what worked, discuss lessons learned, and talk about what I would do differently next time. Whether you're interested in growing potatoes in containers, raised beds, potato towers, boxes, or small-space gardens, there's something here for every gardener.

If you've ever wondered about the best way to grow potatoes, potato tower results, container potato gardening, harvesting potatoes, growing food at home, or backyard gardening experiments, this video is for you!

Forget the Haters. Gardening is always a learning experience. At least you're giving it a go and experimenting. Keep up the good work. Cheers from Australia.

I agree it is like Christmas harvesting root crops.

Chad: Congratulations on your harvest. You had potatoes in two months. That is fantastic. I am into my fourth month in crates and they still have not died off. I started them in February indoors because they sprouted and moved them outside in the first week of April. Up here in zone 6b, I was wearing a spring jacket today in the garden. Potato harvests are always exciting. Gratitude for sharing with us.💛Jamaican/Canadian

When I was a little girl we would go to church then fishing and I remember I stepped in fire ants and was screaming and my grandpa picked me up and threw me in the river to get them off. One of my best memories oddly enough.

One of the more realistic reviews of potatoes grown in containers that I've seen... thank you!

Love a good potato harvest. I have tried all the ways in my many years and get the best results in the ground. If you don't have the space, the bigger/deeper the container, the better.

Chad,
I did learn something--I learned what a seed potato looks like & how the new potato grows off of it.
Thank you.

I absolutely LOVE the fall harvest treasure hunt! And there's no better way to get kids excited about gardening than to have them plant, care for, and harvest their very own root crop.

I put grass clippings, old soil out of pots, leaves and kitchen scraps into an old broken trash can and compost it. In Spring, I plant several tiny potatoes in it. As the potato plants grow, I add decaying leaves and yard cuttings. When potato plants are completely dead, I turn the holey trash can over, and pour out my potatoes. I keep the tiny ones in the fridge in zipper bag till next planting season. I've never bought seed potatoes. They started originally from potato peelings from the kitchen.

You should check out The Millennial Gardener. When he moved into his home, his yard was filled with ants. He made a video on how he resolved the issue.

I would check the ground under the box. Potatoes could be in the ground. 😁

Thanks for sharing your experiments! We also experimented this year and grew several varieties of potato in a raised bed. We usually grow potatoes in large totes set up on bricks to help keep out soil pests. We planted about 1.5 pounds of potatoes in our row and harvested 22.8 pounds of potatoes, which included about 3 to 4 pounds of really small potatoes and very few larger baking size... I think if we would have had a normal year with more heat and space between rains, our taters would have maybe done better. Our backs weren't happy digging them from the raised beds, so we'll be going back to using our totes next time. But it's great fun to experiment!

1st year of growing and harvesting potatoes. Learned a lot and can't wait for next year.

Never mind them harvest. Backyard garden is all fun and experimental. Next season, put in all the changes and additions for better harvest . No failures, just learning steps 😂😂😂😂😂.

I usually am disappointed with potato harvests. I have russets and sweet potatoes in this year. I did the crates with the whites and had them 2-on-2 until last week when I took the second floor off to find no growth. I feel like it just didn't get enough sun. The sweets are in half barrels and so far look good . I wanted to tell you that here in SC fire ant hell, I never put containers right on the ground. I usually put a few cinder blocks or bricks. That lessens the odds against the ants but moreover allows me to bait the ants on the ground if they get in and not in the container.

Thanks for sharing, I did this experiment a few years back in Milk crates- I found the soil compacted too much... However, still got potatos.
Fire ants were and still are not from the Lord!!
I'm about to replant potatoes for the fall... We use a horse watering trough. And that's been working great!! We've got Voles here, so anything in the ground gets destroyed... And as we're older, we love our raised beds.
Blessings
