The food was as good as the Navy can get it because the job itself sucked a lot. Food is Morale. If the Food is good, people can handle the suck a bit longer.

Getting a decent meal every day was probably the only thing keeping some of those guys from going postal.

Submarines like this are probably the closest thing we have to large crew space travel like we see in science fiction. It makes me wonder if a journey to Mars might be like this if a colony is ever built there

80 men across multiple watches would mean it is small batch cooking by navy standards , especially compared to a carrier where the catering team is cooking for thousands .

And small batch cooking is always better than cooking for thousands of people.

Basically  a Submarine is like a good small town cafe , while an aircraft carrier is like a hospital kitchen or a high school cafeteria.

the pros of being a ex serving museum curator for the navy.  You get to curate the ship that was once your workplace, the place you cleaned meticulously and maintained, you know the place inside and out; now a museum.  A luxury that many museums these days just don't have.
