Anyone remember the real Smokin' Joe? "Smokin" Joe Dominic? He gave Marciano the toughest fight of his career. It was a bruising bout feature two truly great heavyweights. Lorne McCarthy fought on the undercard. He had an impressive 2-11 record.

Most would pick Rocky. But honestly I can't say for sure. This is a true dream fight.

Very detailed and interesting. You brought some great points. These were two warriors .Tough men.All time sluggers.Your inside to this was fair. The facts were fair.Good job! Thank you.

One thing about Marciano is that his extremely short arms allowed him to not need much seperation to get his devestating short punches off on the inside. Dempsey was great on the inside as well, especially with his short left hook, but he needed a bit more space to land those punches. Marciano would just maul bigger guys, and force them to fight to keep him at a distance which never worked against him. It did work against Dempsey for a couple of guys. It really comes down to the pace of the fight, and whether or not Marciano could survive the first 7 rounds of the fight. After that, it's Marciano with the W all day. Going a full 15 rounds with Marciano is Hell on Earth because he never slowed down. With that being said, Dempsey was definately the more explosive fighter with quicker hands, quicker feet, and a much longer reach, and greater size.

Dempsey was a mixed martial artist.
He had a black belt in judo, and trained karate and other styles.
He even wrote the self defense manual for the army.

Marciano was a machine.  His gas tank never ran out .

NIce of you to point out how The Rock and Manos de Piedra had similar moves. Both were trained by the incomparable Freddy Brown, and when Duran first began his career, he was called Rocky Duran (it was on his robe when he defeated Ken Buchanan in MSG). As Duran became more refined, he developed into Dempsey, a more rounded fighter, rather than just a mauler and brawler like The Rock.

Great idea for a video, lucky we got your knowledge and skills, Great stuff! When you mentioned about the story of Dempsey’s loaded gloves against Willard all you have to do is watch him destroy Firpo and look at his first round KOs especially against Fred Fulton to prove he didn’t need them

Zeke Brown and Jim Johnson deserved rematches. Those guys could rumble. Fat Willie Meehan won a couple six rounds decisions when Dempsey was a novice. Lee Epperson gave Rocky life and death in their epic battle.

A great video, thank you!

But who will win now? Give me your prediction!
What should be the next breakdown Ali vs Tyson?

Dempsey was viscous in the ring.  Hell he's Mike Tyson's idol.  Rocky Marciano though, started late, was clumsy, and flat footed, was undersized with the shortest he reach etc.  But he had natural power and trained like a mad man.  Always moving forward coming at you. Losing just wasn't an option for him.  The guy was just determined to win.  So I couldn't go against Rocky.

Could Dempsey beat Buddy Baer? Buddy scored first round KOes against good fighters and  under the rules by which Dempsey beat Willard, Buddy (the Willard sized kid brother of Max Baer), could have  stood over and hit Dempsey as  soon as his gloves were off the canvas. Buddy, who put peak Joe Louis through the ropes,  certainly hit harder than Willard,  and everyone threw more punches that Willard; did he land a single blow against Dempsey? Nothing Dempsey ever participated in as reigning champ was that one sided, Carpentier hit him quite a bit. The trouble with Marciano losing against Dempsey is it is all an 'eye test' based on size and Dempsey being supposedly as good allied to an assumption that Dempsey would not have had to take any punishment against Marciano.

Marciano would have knocked him out with a left hook  either coming in or inside   no doubt about it

Willard said he was in a daze and never recovered from the first punch that Dempsey landed, but when you look at it it was landed as a hammer fist except with the thumb side of the glove. Never ever seen that. On wonders why Dempsey was deliberately  'punching' sideways  and impacting on such  relatively fragile part of his hand like that. It  would risk breaking his thumb and yet not be an effective way of hurting Willard. I challenge anyone to say that first blow by Dempsey not extremely peculiar.

Marciano forced fighters to use defense because he kept throwing ao many punches, thus taking their aggressiveness away.

A 24 year old marauding Dempsey would have stopped Marciano by the mid rounds, with Rocky, while still on his feet, being unable to defend himself. Jack just bigger longer reach faster, and while not maybe having as much power in his right hand, was a more effective two handed puncher.

I got Rocky for the one and only needed power connection to turn the tables on this fantasy fight.

Lorne McCarthy had a 2-11 record. Can you imagine how bad the two men he defeated had to have been? Wow.

Ring magazine had an article of such a fight recently, and they had Dempsey winning by seconde round knockout. And this would be how Dempsey would have to go. Marcinao I feel fought better fightrers with the likes of Walcott, Charles, Moore and even Joe Louis who was pst his prime, but probably better than anhyone that Dempsey fought. And yes, One can suggest that Walcott and Charles were passed there  best years. . Angelo Dundee said that Marciano had far better defense than people realized. When we look at the fights that Dempsey had wilth Willard and Firpo, we must remember that there were no 8 cound, or a fighter having to go to a neutral corner. One issue of course with Dempsey is that he very rarely ever fought a black boxer. I believe in his record it is only 3, and one of them John Henry Johnson gave Dempsey a pretty good beating as ZDempsey attested to. When Firpo knocked Dempsey out of the ring, we must also remember that he got put down 5 times or so in that round, and Dempsey on 2. So Firpo was also quite dazed when he went back to his corner. Jack Dempsey claimed that he did not even remember the knock out, as he was really hurt himself, though so was Firpo. Personally I see this fight as close, but Marciano winning a close descision in 15 rounds.
