Hello! I'm Rei, a Japanese woman living in Osaka 😊

I took Friday off, but not for a good reason. I was getting my lower wisdom teeth pulled. This is that whole day, from a rushed konbini breakfast to a five-hour trip home to my parents' place.

The extraction itself took about 30 minutes. In Japan, everyone is covered by public health insurance, so at the counter you pay 30% of the total and the insurance covers the other 70%. The dentist came to 4,190 yen and the medicine to 670 yen — 4,860 yen (about $31) out of my own pocket, which means the real cost was roughly three times that.

Then I set off for my parents' house in Takayama. My non-reserved ticket turned out to be useless: every car on that shinkansen was reserved seating, so I stood in the deck between the cars. By the time I arrived I still couldn't open my mouth much, and my mom had kabocha soup and okayu waiting for me.

What I paid at the dentist: ¥4,860 (about $31)
