The OM SYSTEM PEN Is Not What I Expected

One Month Two Cameras

This video is sponsored by OM SYSTEM, who sent me the new OM SYSTEM PEN to test out. Learn more about the OM SYSTEM PEN: https://explore.omsystem.com/pen?olyc...

I don't get to keep the camera, and this is not a full review. These are just my thoughts after using it for a couple of weeks. I shot the OM SYSTEM PEN largely in Program and Aperture Priority modes, with auto white balance and auto ISO and every photograph and video clip you see is straight out of camera with no post-processing. But this video, and this camera, are not about specifications. It's about having a camera you'll actually use.

So, does the OM SYSTEM PEN pass the test?

Thank god I finally realized you were on a chair. My legs were cramping at what looked to me like a squat straight from some masochistic yoga class. Nice review as well.

Thank you for showing straight out of camera images. The look you can easily achieve is like my primary concern with cameras these days.

Well, Ali, I have a confession: I've been up (way) to late watching the usual suspects as they appear, one-by-one, with the new PEN in-hand, snapping and opining. They're all great, but I had to get to sleep, and (sorta) did, but also had to get on with a few other bits of mundane stuff before hitting the screen again, and up pops your video, with PEN in hand (thank you Vikki Carr), and...it's simply wonderful. Your entire approach along with all the cool familial energy coming through (the kids at 3:07 are a riot). And it does bring home a good chunk of what a good, well-rounded camera can be. I got hold of both a PEN-F and E-M5ii precisely because, with few exceptions, I'm pretty much done with gargantuan gear that frequently doesn't get used on account of being...gargantuan. Neither camera is going anywhere, but they might end up needing to make room for this new PEN before terribly long. Your presentation, among other things, is the most joyful...yep, that's the word I've been hunting for as I've been typing this. Many thanks for this.

The only review worth watching. No sniff test. No raging about sensor size. No unrealistic flapping and running to test the AF. No complaints that it isn't a capable pro sports camera. Just a review from someone who the camera actually suits.

Really an update of my E-P7 with an added EVF! Don't really need the power of an OM3 and not using my OM5 that much...so this is the camera I've been waiting for 🙂

Thanks for the fantastic introduction, as always.
Your review of the OM-3 was superb, so it makes perfect sense that the company chose you.
And the shots you presented to illustrate the camera's purpose were truly moving.
Greetings from Japan. The auto-dubbing worked perfectly.

Great great video. I loved your approach to this new camera. A different and far better in my opinion angle to what a "review" should be. We can feel you love. Your are not just doing a job. Thanks

1:00 Could have said — 'I'm a photographer!' ...but said — 'I'm a bit obsessed with cameras!' 😆

Hahaha holy crap they gave you the camera!!! I remember commenting wanting to see your review on this when the announcement came out! They gave the camera out to good people this time.

You are the correct person to review this camera, and the one and only review people need to watch!

@patatipatata9726 3 weeks ago

The only review worth watching. No technical aspect blablabla... just real life. You're the best!

What a wonderful review. Thank you! I am so excited about this gorgeous little camera. I think OM nailed it!

Stunning photos as ever 😍📸

Camera shooting hobbyists will seek out that super compact m43 camera hoping it makes them look less conspicuous. As soon as they go outside: "Are you a photographer? I just saw you had a camera and I put two and two together". Lol.

I LOVE that you posted SOOC images. These are beautiful and I really like how OM did their color science. I've been a Fujifilm user forever and OM looks like something I would like, moving forward.

This is such an exciting little camera! Love how your style comes through no matter what you use, even the full-frames.
Also the story I tell myself is you were so excited for this damn camera you forgot to sync your audio correctly. 😉🤣

Always appreciate your approach to videos and insights: real-world, evaluating for what it is, how well does it help me make photos. From one Olympus/OM System fan to another, much love!

I fully intend to buy this camera which looks like a perfect introduction to the OM System for me. I travel a lot, so this will be great. I’m with you on phones; they drive me nuts! Thank you for a very enjoyable review.

Happy days, I've been waiting for your take on the camera. It looks like a really nice family cam, but like you said one you can pack in your bag easily for trips. Small is good, big is bad! ;)
