We're looking at the first generation BMW Z4 Coupe - rarer than the roadster, reasonably powerful but fairly frugal - could this be the perfect first sports car?

.....after 150K trouble free miles I still love it, Never has let me down. Runs like a champ and still gets looks everywhere I go.

Love these, very under-appreciated, "proper" sports car (RWD, manual, long bonnet, short boot, normally aspirated, straight six etc) but at the same time they're not too crazy so make a great daily driver. I also think they look great and are part of that generation of BMWs which have aged incredibly well.

I lived in the Philippines for ten years and while there I bought a Z3 3.0i Coupe, auto. Great car and lots of fun. I was at the Manila BMW car show which was over two days. I was asked if I wanted to enter my car in the best car in show competition. I agreed as I got to park inside the ringed off public area. Surprise, surprise I won the best car in show as voted for by the public attending the show. Beating M5, M6 X5 etc. My car was wrapped in an ice blue matte finish, staggered wheels.

I’m not young anymore, but I’ve treated myself with one of these lets say for my 40th birthday and couldn’t agree more with Jay. Get one in manual if you can, it really is pretty special. Cheers from Poland.

For young people??? They are a GREAT car for any age! I've just hit 60 and 3yrs ago I bought a 3 litre auto E85 as a bit of fun for the weekends and holidays, but last year before lock down I decided to trim down my fleet and sold my much newer, more sensible and more practical 5 series and kept the Zed. My wife and I litterally fight over who is going to drive it! As I write this we have just returned from a 230 mile round trip to Yorkshire with the roof down all the way and the car has been a blast. Cheap to insure and cheap to run. Values are now on the up so what's not to like?!

I love how you make so many videos about “cars for young people” 😂

I have a 3.0si convertible. Brilliant first sports car!

Man that n52 sound never gets old!

"Costs you about the same as a very disappointing bacon sandwich and coffee at an airport" is one of the most specific yet humorous cost analogies I've heard all year 🤣

Hi, I had the 3.0si and now the M version.
The M is something else and very rare. Very Exclusive. A real sport car with the famous 3.2 engine.
Anyway, for everyday, the 3.0si is probably the best choice.

When BMW was still BMW.

I agree completely with Jay on this one. Get a more relaxed ride with 85% of the capability of the M car without suffering the harshness of the M. That and the Bangle design make this a great choice.

Bigger boot in the 3.0si as the battery is located in the lower boot floor, the z4mc had the battery in the boot due to the quad exhaust using up the space on the osr lower section where the battery normally sits

I had a 2007 Z4 Coupe 3.0Si. Black with cream leather and no badges - best car I ever owned (so far) and I wish I'd never sold it. A Bangle design that first gave us the roadster then, when adding the coupe roof, made it look much better and how it should have been in the forst place - it's also rare!

Absolutely love the first generation Z4's !

Such a classic design. Reminiscent of another of my favourites, the Datsun 240z

If one had a Lexus LS430, six speed auto and a Z4 in the garage, one would have the perfect balance of weekday sensibility with weekend pleasure for not much money....and you would be VERY happy!

I've recently purchased a Z4C 3.0si for road and track. Does a great job at both with minimal modifications.

When I had my mini cooper in the shop, they lended me a 2007 z4 3.0si (convertible) and it was the most fun I've ever driven. Given I have only driven a truck, minivan, and a mini cooper... This car is definitely on my radar.
