I have an auto Z4 M40i. 3 years in now and I plan to keep it forever. One of the reasons you call out that it is peak BMW interior ! Everything annoying can be switched off permanently,. The rest of the controls just work including the brilliant 8 programmable buttons. Driving-wise it's a brilliant all round car. Long distance cruiser,  B-road blast, mooch about town, it does it all. I chuck a tent in and go to festivals, do the shopping, or just go out on my own for the hell of it. Once I can't get an official warranty on it I'll be tuning it up to 450+ bhp. As for storage, you might have missed this there is a felt lined sunglasses drawer under the dash by your right knee :-)

Everyone putting those raised spoiler extensions on the top rear edge of the trunk lid that I think looks terrible.

I have one. M40i. Red (wife requirement...) Emotional and amazing gearbox (automatic). Really much value for money. I'ts so good in both cruising mode as well as more sporty driving. I get rid of the roof at 3 degrees Celsius if no rain. And it works, even if I'm in a T-shirt.

I live and work in Asia and wasn’t particularly interested in convertibles. However, I kept noticing Z4s on BMW dealers’ forecourts and really liked the shape. When I read that this would be the last production run, I didn’t even test-drive one — I just bought one in white with a red interior.

It’s a 25i, which isn’t a UK model, but it’s a fantastic car and I love everything about it — the look, the interior, the controls, and even the boot size. I would have preferred a manual but I love it and put the top down as often as I can.

As this is the last of the line, I think it’s a long-term keeper, and I’ll definitely ship it back to the UK when I’ve finished here — even in left-hand drive.

Boxster or Z4? Here's how I've chosen to answer that question: Both. - I had planned to get the BMW first, but finding out that Porsche was discontinuing the 718 gave me enough FOMO to want to find and grab a nice 4.0 GTS. For me, a 6-cylinder manual was imperative. The BMW (also manual) is on order and will arrive in the Spring.

Hi Pete, thanks for the review and you having come from a Boxster it was interesting to hear your comparison. I agree with you in that once you have a roadster, the experience is one that is difficult to give up.  I started with a third generation MX-5, a brilliant car but found to be a little bit small and cramped for longer road trip holidays so this was followed by two Z4’s, both second generation E89 models, with the latter one a 35iS having the same power and torque as the M40i you tested. I’m now on my second Audi TT, a third generation with 4 wheel drive. I’d loved to have had a Boxster but a bit too pricey for me.  I didn’t go for the later Z4 for a couple of reasons.  As you said these cars deliver on the fun factor on twisty B roads and the latest Z4 is even wider than the previous generation so given the narrowness and increasing busyness of roads around where I live I didn’t want something bigger (that’s not a criticism of the car, just a personal preference). The second thing is that my experience of the 35iS was that its performance was devastating in a straight line but unnerving on the twisty stuff.  Swapping the run flat tyres for decent normal ones made a big improvement.  Jeremy Clarkson drove one and described it as having a brilliant engine but power that overwhelmed the chassis…I think I’d have to agree with that.  I would hope BMW improved things for the next generation but I haven’t had the opportunity to drive one to compare.  Sometimes, more power doesn’t translate into more driving enjoyment, the MX-5 is testimony that.  Anyway it’s great that these cars exist and they are a dying breed so we must enjoy them while we can!

On the back of this video I bought a 2020 2.0ltr M-Sport. They are a fantastic car to drive, power if you need it or just cruise around and chill. Reminds me a little of my 2.8 Capri with the big long bonnet, sports seats just wonderful.

Amazing car this! Bought mine last week on a portimao blue paint and its stunning. I agree that the gearbox is a bit notchy and when you get it right, yes, it definitely is a rewarding experience.  Thank you for sharing your honest thoughts.
