Set during WWII and filmed in Greece, this classic brought up a lot of emotions and plenty of questions!

The story had some moments where we got a little lost in the plot, but the performances and the mission pulled us in.

We had a long chat at the end, mostly about the actors (Gregory Peck, David Niven, Anthony Quinn!) and some of the ideas the film touches on.

We’ll be honest... this one got a little chaotic! 😅
The plot had us guessing at times, but it was still a meaningful watch for our national holiday.

David Niven plays a reluctant soldier in this movie but in reality he had a distinguished military career. A graduate of Sandhurst Military Academy, he resigned his commission in the early thirties and eventually got into film. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he returned to Britain and served as an officer throughout the war.

this film was wildly popular in its day . as a young teen NAVARONE was cool . A real special big budget extravaganza.

What a joy to see someone reacting to this brilliant classic! Gregory Peck, David Niven, and Anthony Quinn... that trio of leads alone makes it worthwhile. But it's a great film... with brilliant music, memorable action scenes, and, as I said, a spectacular cast... one of the best classic war films.

She gained international recognition through such popular award-winning films as The Guns of Navarone (1961), Zorba the Greek (1964) and Z (1969).

James Darren (the young Greek guy who was the team killer) was a singer, who was just starting to break into acting. That's why they had him sing that song at the wedding. Back in those days, whenever they had a singer acting in a movie, they would have him (or her) sing. It was what the audience expected when they saw a singer in a film.

I don't think anyone has mentioned it but Anthony Quinn is also in Lawrence of Arabia. He has a prosthetic nose for his part but even with that and a Arabian accent he is totally recognizable. Great actor believable in any role.

Filmed in Rhodes/Rhodes, the Acropolis scene at the beginning was Lindos..

It was the clear responsibility of the resistance contact to kill her countrywoman. She was the one who brought her into the group and vouched for her reliability, thereby putting them all at risk. It could not have been any other way and she knew it, just as she knew the men would have been most reluctant executioners.

I love Gregory Peck, there's something about his demeanor, he comes off as very reassuring and calm, and with a lot of integrity. Loved him in "To Kill a Mockingbird", and in a total different role in "Roman Holiday".

While a fictional story, it's based on a few different episodes in the Mediterranean theatre of operations (such as the Dodecanese) and also in Sicily.

From the book, Peck's character is based on the Edmund Hillary who was the first to climb Mount Everest.

I feel the same way about Gregory Peck, yet I never get tired of seeing this movie. It is one of my all-time favorites. Too bad he didn't do more adventure movies.

About 50% of the time when an American movie has a scene in a Greek rural village, there's always a wedding going on. Just like when we Americans made a western/cowboy film during the 1950's and 1960's, there is almost always a Fiesta (festival) going on when the action goes to a small Mexican town.
