The man who plays "Blythe", Donald Pleasance, was an actual WWII POW. He was captured by the Germans when his Lancaster bomber was shot down over France.

Yes a true story, my father was a POW for 5 years, and was in this camp. He told me that were many skills and former professions amongst the prisoners from watchmakers to engineers.

The Luftwaffe is the German air force. The camp was run by them, because all the prisoners were flyers. After the escape, we see the Luftwaffe Commandant being replaced by an SS officer. (You can tell by the insignia on their collars.)

I've never seen you 2 ladies before. You're from Greece, then you must watch my other most favorite childhood war movie from the 60s: 'The Guns of Navarone' as it takes place in Greece. Great reaction!

If you like to see Steve McQueen, James Coburn and Charles Bronson together again in a movie watch The Magnificent Seven. It is a great Western. I am quite sure you will like it!

Ladies, when the British had to evacuate, many were helped by greek patriots to survive the war, today there are families whose existence is because of greek courage, when I'm in the bar tonight, I raise a glass to the memory of the Greeks who died with us in the cause of freedom.💪🇬🇧🇬🇷

I liked the bit where they were watching the bike theft and she said 'we should learn all these skills'.

The movie was filmed.... on location in Germany at the Bavaria Film Studio in the Munich suburb of Geiselgasteig in rural Bavaria, where sets for the barrack interiors and tunnels were constructed.

To our greek brothers and sisters, we remember your contribution in the war..... 💪🇬🇧

I had a part-time job in a deli when I was a kid. It was the early '80s and there was an older man there who had been in a German POW camp for about a year-and-a-half. He said everybody lost a lot of weight, but they weren't really abused or tortured. He said when he got home and found out how prisoners were treated in Japanese POW camps, he felt lucky that he'd been in a German one.

You guys would enjoy The Guns of Navarone. It's a WW2 epic where the action is focused in Greece. It might be fun to react to the Greek characters. It's an early 60s film and Hollywood cast their stars and didn't care much if they were of the correct ethnicity. Anthony Quinn plays the major Greek character and he was Mexican and Irish! Anthony Quinn also played Zorba in Zorba the Greek.

I also recommend "Stalag 17" 1953

Rather STUNNED that: Steve McQueen (Hilts) has been gone now, 45 years . . .

10:00 the commandant of the prison camp is probably a veteran of World War 1 who was in the military from before Hitler took power. Thus his lack of enthusiasm.

Donald Pleasance was an actually in a german WWII POW camp during the war.

The guy with the USA tab on his shoulder is actually an American who was fighting with the British in what they called the eagle squadron And what that was it was basically a bunch of volunteer American pilots who were fighting with the British before America entered the war

The popularity of this film was instrumental to the creation of the 1965 comedy series "Hogan's Heroes".

That great musical score was provided by the amazing Elmer Bernstein. The other great WW2 POW films include STALAG 17 (1953), THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI (1957), and KING RAT (1965) - I highly recommend all three!
