SUMMARY:

Creation and Delivery:

The palantiri were forged by Fëanor, the most powerful elf in history, in ancient times. The Noldor used them as tools of communication and observation, but shortly before the fall of Númenor, they gave them to the faithful Númenóreans as a gesture of trust and loyalty to the Valar. After the fall of Númenor, Elendil escaped with the seven stones to Middle-earth.

Distribution among the kingdoms:

In Middle-earth, the palantíri were strategically located: three in Arnor (Amon Sûl, Annúminas, and the Tower Hills) and four in Gondor (Osgiliath, Minas Ithil, Minas Anor, and Orthanc). Their purpose was to strengthen communication and surveillance between the kingdoms of the Dúnedain.

Lost Stones:

Palantir of Osgiliath: The most powerful of the stones, capable of listening to communications between the others, was lost during the civil war known as the Kin-strife. Amid the siege and burning of the city, the stone fell into the River Anduin and was lost forever.

Palantir of Amon Sûl and Annúminas: Both stones disappeared in the North Sea when King Arvedui, the last of Arnor, died trying to escape from the Witch-king in Forochel Bay.

Stones active during the War of the Ring:

Palantir of Minas Ithil (Minas Morgul): Captured by Sauron, who used it for manipulation and spying. Its fate after Sauron's defeat is uncertain.

Palantir of Orthanc: Used by Saruman in Isengard until he fell under Sauron's influence. It was then used by Aragorn to challenge the enemy and draw their attention away from Frodo.

Palantir of Minas Anor (Minas Tirith): Guarded by Denethor, who succumbed to Sauron's manipulations, driving him mad and rendering the stone virtually unusable.

Palantir of Elostirion or the Stone of Elendil: The only one disconnected from the others, it faced west toward Valinor. It was taken back to the Undying Lands with Frodo and Bilbo at the end of The Lord of the Rings.
