The films are far removed from what actually happened on the Paths of the Dead. Let's explore the secrets of that dark road and discover how the arduous journey truly unfolded in Tolkien's books.

Cheers!

SUMMARY:

Introduction
The Paths of the Dead are a cursed pass through the White Mountains. According to the legends of Rohan, no one who has entered has ever returned alive. The most famous case is that of Baldor, son of King Brego, who, after a rash oath, entered the Dark Gate and disappeared forever. It is said that the "Dead Men" of the Dark Years watch the path and only reveal themselves in times of imminent death.

The Grey Company
Aragorn does not undertake this journey alone. He is joined by the Grey Company: 30 Dúnedain of the North led by Halbarad, along with the sons of Elrond (Elladan and Elrohir), Legolas, and Gimli. These rangers are rough-looking men, but noble and wise in spirit, descendants of the exiles of Númenor. They were not summoned directly by Aragorn, but came thanks to a message from Galadriel, who foresaw the need for their presence.

Deliberation at Helm's Deep
After using the Palantír and defying Sauron's will, Aragorn discovers an urgent threat: the Corsairs of Umbar are advancing south to attack Gondor. To intercept them in time, the only possible route is to cross the mountains via the Paths of the Dead. Aragorn decides to accept his destiny as Isildur's heir, supported by the prophecy of Malbeth the Seer, which foretold the heir's return to summon the "forbidden ones."

Who were the Dead?
The inhabitants of the mountains were men who swore allegiance to Isildur during the Last Alliance, but broke their promise out of fear of Sauron. Isildur cursed them to have no rest until they fulfilled their word. It was not a magical power of Isildur, but the spiritual force of the broken oath and the will of Eru that confined their souls as wraiths to the roots of the mountains.

Departure for the Sanctuary and Geography
The company sets off swiftly for the Sanctuary, a fortified plateau in the White Mountains. There, Aragorn bids farewell to a distraught Éowyn, who begs him not to go or to let her accompany him.

Geographically, the Ways function as a tunnel beneath the Ered Nimrais (White Mountains), connecting Dimholt (in the north, Rohan) with the Vale of Morthond (in the south, Gondor). It is the only way to cross the mountain range without circumventing it for weeks.

Narrative of the Journey and the Mysterious Skeleton
Upon entering the Dark Gate, terror becomes palpable. The horses tremble, and only Aragorn's will keeps the group together. Gimli, despite being a dwarf accustomed to the depths, suffers a paralyzing fear.

Inside, they find Baldor's skeleton. The Prince of Rohan died a gruesome death: his remains lie before a locked door he could not open, his legs broken and his fingers still clinging to the stone, suggesting he was stalked and left to die in the darkness by the wraiths.

To the Stone of Erech
After leaving through the South Gate into the Vale of Morthond, the company rides on, pursued by an unseen army of shades. The local inhabitants flee in terror, crying, "The King of the Dead marches upon us!"

They finally reach the Stone of Erech, a black sphere brought from Númenor by Isildur. There, Aragorn sounds a silver horn and summons the Dead. They agree to follow him to Pelargir to fight Sauron's servants and, at last, find peace and fulfill their ancient oath.
