I went through Marine Recruit Training on Parris Island in the early 1980s, a few years before that movie was made. My Senior Drill Instructor was just like Gunny Hartmen. Its not a joke. They do that to mentally condition the recruit, to make them mentally hard, get them to think when things are going on around them, to break that shell of civilianhood, help them create a personal awareness.
You guys have to understand. those men may be forced to move forward and attack a situation in which they will be killed. these men must follow orders even in the situation that they will die horribly. they get broken down to nothing then built back into marines. This is what makes a man charge an enemy machine gun with no regaurd for his own life. Men that go through this fight for the man next to them. understand that
My dad was a private in the Marines during the Vietnam War and the DI portrayal is accurate he always told me. When he got to be a sergeant himself, he was talking to his platoons the same way. When he got out, the language cleaned up but the attitude was still there. Once a Marine, always a Marine!!
Served in the US Army between 2009-2013, as an officer, and seeing civilians react to training treatment is amusing. Take it from me, if you cannot cut it during basic training, then the life in the field isn't for you. You eventually get used to the insults, and after some time, you're desensitized to crudeness lol.
