My dad was a marine from 1957-1963 and he said this depiction of boot camp was the most realistic

Fun fact, most of ermy's insults were improvised on the spot but the director needed insults in the script so ermy gave him 4 pages of insults

15:43 he isn't sucking his thumb by choice. Hartman is using that as a humiliation tactic

Private Pyle later known as Kingpin Wilson Fisk in Daredevil.
Private Joker later known as Papa in Stranger Things.

This wasn’t kind of an anti-war movie. This was a full on, in your face anti-war movie.

I got to meet R Lee Ermey once.  He came out to do a morale tour while I was deployed WAAAY back in 2006.  He was great, took tons of photos with people, told jokes, and was super down to Earth.  My favorite was someone asked him how much he got paid to film the kiss with Jack Black, and his answer was "a shit load."

I used to shoot high power rifle competitions, and the CMP National Matches were held at Camp Perry in Ohio.  In 2011, for the match I was squadded with R. Lee Ermey.  When I first saw him, I was so nervous that he was going to be like his character, but he turned out to be one of the nicest and funniest guys I've ever met.  Despite shooting a national level match, he was hounded by fans all day, and he didn't turn a single one away for an autograph or a picture.  It was the best day of that whole week of competition for me.  Rest in Peace, Gunny!

At the exact moment when Joker kills the sniper, the peace sign pin on his chest is blocked completely from view. Kubrick was meticulous about every single frame he put on film. A true genius he was.

"Let's watch a war movie!"
Proceeds to watch the most anti-war movie ever made

The "Singing" is cadence, it's a mix of step keeping and indoctrination

Smartest Alex reaction I've ever seen.

Whole levels of respect earned

The hooker's lines were popularized by 2 Live Crew. You need to react to their album

R. Lee Ermey is one of the very few actors that Kubrick allowed to improvise.

My dad was in the military for 32 years and has always said that the boot camp in this movie is very realistic

Just got home from Parris Island. Really wish I watched this beforehand lol

I’m in the navy. When people ask me why I didn’t join the marines, I tell them that the boot camp sequence of this movie scared me away.

I saw the thumbnail and immediately thought Alex is going to love the first 20 minutes of this movie.

30:20 In this scene Joker is being sarcastic, he’s trying to make a point about how absurd what they’re doing is

My uncle was in the Marines during Vietnam. They woke  the platoon up told them to put their footlockers on their backs and march around the barracks. Then an hour later the drill instructor came out and yelled at them all for being out of bed. Its just to break them down.

The smile from Pyle right before he checks out in the bathroom is known as the "Kubrick Stare." It's popularity originated in another great Kubrick movie "A Clockwork Orange" and was used in earlier works like Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho." It's where the actor angles his face towards the camera, and looks up at it through their brow while smiling. It was also used in The Shining (another Kubrick), as well as many other characters such as Heath Ledger's Joker, Jake Gyllenhaal's Donnie Darko, and basically the whole premise of Smile.

It's such a good effect because of how off-putting and seemingly 4th wall breaking it is the longer it goes on.
