He was a real drill instructor and completely improvised this scene

This is a test to see how people react to high stress situations

I'm a 71 year old Marine Corps Veteran and my Senior Drill Instructor was worse than him.
I was the guide in my platoon and he still scared the shit out of me.

That's about how it was. I served 20 years in the Marine Corp and two combat tours in Vietnam. The first tour as a machine gunner (0331) in 1965-66 and the second as a Platoon commander (0369) in 1970-71. I retired after 20 years and had a 30 year career as a California police officer ( Marin County). What I learned in the Marine Corps has helped me all my life. I highly recommend it to anyone needing direction and wishing to learn self discipline .

As a retired Marine this was boot camp in 1985

There exists a whole genre of relatively unknown comedians, known only to those who have gone thru Marine Corps boot camp

A lot of people DO NOT understand, but keep in mind the timeframe, this was during the Vietnam war, and for war, you need HARD men, and the only way to get hard men is through hard training, boot camp is meant to scrub away your individuality so you can start to work with others AS A TEAM, because once you are put on the battlefield, the man next to you is all you have, and you MUST be able to trust him as much as he must trust you, the brutalities and savageries of war are in no way pretty, heroic, or glorious, they are offensive, disgusting and horrific, these are things that human being are not born with, they must be trained for.

I joined the Army active duty in 1991; at the height of the Gulf War in the Saudi desert, I had already seen this movie before joining, went to Ft. Knox Kentucky to Armor school. I expected this abuse but wanted the training and discipline more, we were harassed for the first week (Hell Week) by the Drill Sergeants (usually 3 at a time). It got better, unless you did not achieve the standard. They could not physically touch us; but they improvised by other means, I was taught, that you never need to touch someone to hurt them. They are hard because your enemies will never be this kind. Cpl. Hofmann, 1/41st, 2nd Armor Division (Hell on Wheels) 91'-99' Hoo Rahh!!!

He's so mean, he's so mean...

I laugh at these reactions

@johnscott4196 11 months ago

Yes Ames this is obviously where Vince Vaughn modeled his character after

@RobertSimpson-b2j 6 months ago

That whole opening scene was not scripted, that was all him

I'm always amazed at how many people don't understand that (as Hela kept saying) war is much harder. More stressful. More intense. If you can't handle this, we need to know before you get farther into training and endanger everyone else. "Weed out all non-hackers" as he opened with

6:15 Is why Addie is the best!

@tommarks3726 9 months ago

He is just going from Pvt to Pvt. nonstop full speed. Amazing performance.

@danielthompson2894 10 months ago

I'm really surprised that almost every one of you on here making comments or watching the video have never seen or heard about boot camp in the military.

“Addie Counts.” Girl in blue shirt. I posted this on other clips. You totally kill me. Your nervous “ok”, “ok”, “ok”. I just laugh. Because it’s so sincere. And awkward.
