Thank you for another well researched and presented piece. I was an artist living in San Francisco during the mid 70's. As an artist one tends to work at a number of "Odd Jobs" one of them was being a floor-walker in a sweat shop in the SOMA district. There I met an older woman who worked a single needle overlock sewing machine. During our lunch hour she would come and sit next to me wanting to know what a "...young educated white boy..." was doing working there?
She had been a Professor Of Marxist Theory in a prestigious college in China, and her husband had been an Engineer and a mid-level party member, both of them had lost everything in the Cultural Revolution and fled China to survive. No one in the US needed a Professor Of Marxist Theory, and her husband's Engineering education was useless in the US unless he went back to school to acquire a degree, so she worked in a sweat shop by day, and he worked as a security guard at night.
The irony is that China became the very "bourgeois capitalists" the Red Guard viewed as existential threats to the socialist revolution.
There is some speculation that the Cultural Revolution was so traumatic for a young Xi Jinping that when he gained power, he completely re-created the CCP under his sole control to prevent anything like that from ever happening again ( and paradoxically creating the power dynamics in the CCP for someone else to re-create it ).
In the Canadian movie, "The Barbarian Invasions", the main character recalls his talk with a Chinese girl, whose family had died during the Cultural Revolution. Add the fact the protagonist had been fascinated with the Mao's deeds and totally unaware of the girl's situation. So you can imagine, how the whole thing ended... Sorry for this digression, thanks for the lecture :-)
Capitalist Roader Cycles.
Three decades later I helped him and my mom move to a new house, and I stumbled across the book, which my dad let me take. At the time was working in a medical research facility at UC San Francisco, and we had a couple of Chinese post-grad researchers among our staff. You can imagine their surprise when I took it in to show them. They were toddlers during the revolution so didn't remember much themselves, but they sure were affected by it's reverberations as they grew up and became young adults.
Unfortunately the book was destroyed, along with many other books, when my storage unit developed a huge leak one winter.
