In the 1960s, China is back as a major world power - a nuclear-armed communist state, charting its own course. Chairman Mao makes his return to frontline politics, calling for permanent ‘Cultural Revolution’. The consequences for Chinese society will be far-reaching, transformative and traumatic.
But Mao cannot live forever, and as his power fades in the following decade, those in his shadow fight for the right to lead China into the future.

I remember once listening to Chinese woman who endured the Cultural Revolution. According to her:
She enjoyed participating in mob violence against, scholars, clergy, skeptics, and Communist officials who Mao deemed unworthy of their positions.
Only after, the mob had run out of persecuting the scholars, clergy, skeptics and excommunicated Communist officials, and started purging itself, including herself, did her stance on the Cultural Revolution change.

Deng Xiaoping studied in Paris when he was young. He liked to eat bread and watch football...😊

Zhou Enlai is such an interesting figure for me as a kind of opposite character to Mao, being a tactful, calm diplomatic figure but also surviving Mao's outbursts. Thanks for covering his influence of this period in Chinas history.

Another banger from E.H. One of the best historical channels on this platform. Your voice alone makes them incredible good.

The videos from this channel make me feel the same historical fascination I felt when I was a kid watching history channel documentaries before it became the UFO channel. But these videos also have significantly higher factuality and depth of information.

The Cultural Revolution created one of the biggest loss of cultural and historical relics, archives and monuments since the Great Confucian Purge by Emperor Qin Shi Huang. That's thousands of years of Chinese history that can not be recovered. 😢

*Edit: I am aware that the Eight Powers did pilllage a lot of Chinese heritage during the early 1900s and that many treasures were looted during the 1980s and 1990s when ancient tombs were broken into.

I hope someday documentaries like this will be allowed in China…😢

I lived in China for 10 years from 2004-2015, my first job posting being in the backwaters go Gansu Province at a college as an ESL teacher. The Dean of the Foreign Languages department was actually a Red Guard who was in Tiananmen Square when Mao announced the Cultural Revolution- he had only just started university which was obviously quickly shut down before being sent to Gansu to work on the farms, where he stayed. Obviously under Deng Xiaoping he finally did get his education in the 80's, and by the time I arrived he was only just finishing up his Master's degree (another foreign teacher was helping with proofreading). Education was still so behind when I started working there, the huge catchup in the poorer provinces that were still badly affected by Mao's policies.

It is amazing to think that the country still was able feed itself and have other basics necessities during all of this chaos.

The situation was complex across different regions during the Cultural Revolution. In Wuhan, it was a battle between temporary workers and ordinary citizens against veteran workers. Records of the Cultural Revolution in Wuhan were written jointly by both factions, depicting their struggle from life-or-death conflicts to their eventual layoffs during the reform and opening-up period. In Qinghai, it was a battle between urban residents and students against elderly farmers. In Guangxi, the military directly forced a rebellion, resulting in the massacre of many Red Guards. Guangxi is most infamous for its anti-aircraft guns firing directly at residential buildings. Henan was similar, with the faction supported by cadres indiscriminately massacring civilian groups. Yunnan seems to have experienced a similar situation. In Guangxi, cannibalism was indeed a tradition passed down from veterans; it was true veterans who taught how to eat people.
