We used to fish for sprats in the wash back in the 60s huge hauls + many herrings amongst them, small boats small crew, low exspences big pay day.😉 then the Scottish fleet came down, sprats gone.never seen them back .
ends just when it starts to get really interesting, the last two boats i assume work as a pair as the boat with the net end didn't appear to be sitting lower in the water like she might if she had already taken her lot aboard, from the earlier footage when the boat came alongside i figured they might have a daily or weekly quota which is usual with sprats, herring and mackeral among small boats, nice to see the small midwater boats getting their share and the whole lot not being hoovered up by big pursers. my only quibble was the pace they worked at between emptying the codend each time. my late father would have been purple in the face yelling at us to get a move on instead of acting like we had all the time in the world and we'd know the fish still have to be unloaded and the boat redd up before we get a wee doss before heading back out in the evening again for the next tow. i know the logistics of allowing the bag to sink and raising the pipe to let the sprats into the bag before emptying the next bagful but skippers are never known for their patience, i know i wasn't when i graduated to command at 20.
