🚛What is the most stressful part of moving for YOU? 📦

She creates perhaps the best common sense videos related to home ownership, buying, selling, and moving. They need to be about half as lengthy though.

Great content!
When I was a young guy I worked a few months as a mover. Nothing slows you down more than loose items. Pack tight and make the boxes full so they don't start collapsing as they get piled up.
Save the plants, mirrors, and valuables for a trip in your car.

As a former realtor, your videos are excellent

One important piece of advice I can offer people, because of experience: whether you are de-cluttering your for-sale- home, or that of a parent, it’s less stressful if you remind yourself, that is it better to remember your parents for who they are (were), than what they owned.

The decluttering is the hardest part for me.

Unless you are really attached to your furniture, consider cost to move it versus cost to replace it. Sure, there may be a few things you want to keep , but the less you move the more you save. An estate sale can work in your favor to sell what you have and use those funds to help offset the cost of new furniture .

I love your idea of the colored labels for EACH room! We moved from one state to another and hired a company that at time of pick up told me my stuff would arrive in a week in a different truck! What??? I was so thankful I had NUMBERED each box and had a list of what was in each number. They were confused, I said every box needs to be delivered. They new I had kept track of everything. Was it work YES! But EVERY SINGLE BOX arrived undamaged. the time and effort paid off. ( I wrote the number on the box with a giant marker. No way the label would come off. )

I think you should periodically declutter and get rid of what you don’t want or use. Ideally, I would like to try to declutter twice a year, but I’m bad about not doing that. I think it’s good for older people to declutter some so their children don’t have as much to do later.

When I learned that moving companies only insure by weight, not value - I saw no reason to use them, especially considering what they charge. Instead, for my move, since I had already used a fantastic hauling company prior and they did out of state moving, I called them. They charged by the person, by the hour. I secured the rental moving truck, but had them drive it (truck rental company has to know who is driving, etc), between houses. It took them a full day (and into the night) but knowing that the trucks were never unattended, was a good feeling. We decided to rent two large trucks - and there was plenty of room, as opposed to renting just one. The guys decided which items went into which truck - so it all went great and I saved some money. I made sure to rent blankets for them from the truck rental company - so they would have everything they needed - as would a moving company need. The only problem that I had to deal with was I own two large dogs that do not do well in kennels. So as to keep them out of everyone's way, I put them in my car, windows open in the shade so I could take care of them throughout the day - and they basically just slept on their beds all day. They were super happy because mom was still near by - and I knew they weren't stressed out in a kennel.

Regarding the change of address: not just for the post office! Update that default address in Amazon, Target, anywhere you order online. Ask me how I know.

We just finished moving out everything after 52 years of living that our parents bought and paid for. Very nice home but a lot of work and things leftover by us kids too. It’s a lot of work. Stay at it and you Will finish it and then fix some things up and you will be proud.

Just discovered your channel and am watching all videos! I often slow down the playback speed so I can take notes! One recommendation, label boxes on all four sides especially if your boxing up early or storing them until moving. I rented a temporary storage space and moved items into the space as I purged and cleaned out the house. Off and on visits to the storage space, I would pull out a box and put it back and it was helpful to have the boxes labeled on all sides, also I found that at the storage space, I would tend to declutter once again, asking myself if I really needed that item, or if that item was really headed to my new place. You're a gem! Glad your channel came up!

Such helpful advice from someone who clearly knows what she's talking about! The cheerful attitude was a bonus!

I've closed 2 houses where the owner still had stuff in the house. In both cases they just plain ran out of time. For each, at close we added a rider that said "including all remaining items" and we took full possession. This is common with Pool Tables and Pianos (i've gotten each in the past). We did the close, and we gave the furniture and crap they left to our inbound movers, they were glad to take it off our hands. Consider this option if this travesty happens to you and it has for us twice.

It's stressful lining up the next rental house-especially if you have pets. Most of us have to get our equity out of current house before we buy the next house. Depending on where you are moving it may not be possible to sell and buy at the same time.

We found the following helpful when we moved with a Pod:

1. Buy disposable dehumidifiers like DampRid if you live in the South or are moving there.
2. Use bungee cords and ratchet tie down straps to ensure that your belongings don't move too much while in transit.
2. Cover EVERYTHING in moving blankets and plastic wrap.
5. Include an air tag or similar device so you can track the Pod while it has your stuff.

When I moved into my first apartment, I hired the best moving company in town. They had 5 stars on every platform. I happily paid for it because it took all the stress out of moving. They arrived on time, packed everything up neatly and within one hour my new place was ready. No chipped furniture, no broken glass, no helpers who accidentally damaged something. My partner's sister once had a 'friend' who got drunk during the move, damaged the elevator and my sister in law and partner had to pay 1500 euro 😵‍💫 So they paid way more than I did for a company.

The black trash bag scenario happened to me. I put my matching quilt, pillow shams etc., in a black trash bag as it was among last, loose items in the house All the boxes were taped up and stacked. Well, sure enough, that bag got tossed out with other bagged up trash.
