My goal is my own creativity, confidence, and feel. I learned bass clef last year, but this year I am trying to not rely on sheet music. It's hard because I hate being wrong, and I'm so bad at learning by ear

The biggest challenge I have always had with practice, is staying fresh with about two hundred songs for my various gigs. I have to devote a minimum of two hours a day playing through songs to remember them, including the lyrics for the many songs i sing lead and backing vocals. Then add learning a new song a week on average and I am grinding. But i just retired from my career (day job) after 40 years, so this will be the first year i can up my playing time from 2 to 4 or 5 hours daily to really shore up my technique.

I'm starting off my 2026 on bass by...starting guitar lessons?! There is a shortage of bass teachers around, but there is a very, very good guitar instructor with a lot of jazz and improvisation experience. I'm hoping to take what I learn and improve on with guitar and help implement it to my bass playing.

I have about 100 songs I can play, played on and off for about 15 years. I learn everything by ear or watching videos. At the minute working on rhythm stick… I have the full bassline down but struggling with getting up to full speed with my right hand…..
