DESCRIPTION
As bass players, our job is to lock in the downbeat and the root note — that's literally what makes us the foundation of the band. But every once in a while, breaking that rule is exactly what makes a bass line sound badass.
In this one, I'm giving you two ways to skip the root note on beat 1 and still sound completely locked in. First, we'll delay it — landing on the third or the octave, then dropping the root right after, either on the & of 1 or on beat 2. Then I'll show you a more advanced move: replacing the root note entirely with a fill that starts right on the downbeat, using the minor pentatonic scale to land you back on the root exactly where you need to be.
We're working over a funky C7 to F7 backing track today, so grab your bass and let's get into it. And remember — this only works if you've already established a strong root-note pattern first. Use these sparingly and they'll hit hard.
