Veritas Medium Router Plane - A Small Package Packs A Big Punch... For The Right Use Case.

The Veritas Medium Router Plane from Lee Valley is an excellent addition to the shop if you have specific needs. It lacks some crucial features from a full size router plane, due to its size, but you get a lot in a small package.

thanks for the thoughts, I like your solution for the lack of fine adjustment.

one refinement to the depth adjust workflow is to get a set of feeler guages, like a mechanic uses for tappets or spark plugs on your car, they go 10 thou [inch] or 0.5mm so you set the feeler under the stop, then press the adjuster to it, like adjusting valves, a smooth pull, that gets a precise adjustment.

fyi at 20:04 the reason is the shank is rectangular, from the view of it, so the screw grabs on the Wider end, if you put the clamping axis on the short side, the screw can't put the same force on the blade.

Thinking about this or the smaller one

interesting, but if you have bigger hands and need the smaller chisel size, why not go the 'combination plane' route, not the full size stanley 55 but the less featured Stanley 45, a 'router' and 'shoulder' plane, you have the fence system for excelent reference to the wood, plus you have the depth stop for the cut so if you need just a 'pair' you can stop the cut before you go too far. Also as the 45 has only One skate you can use the smaller blades, to do the precision joint cuts you show in the video, they take the small [down to 2mm wide] cutters, plus they are 'straight', the 'frog' is what angles the cutter, so its easier to sharpen; say on a Tormek jig, and hone the blade as well, saving metal (if you can hone easy, you don't grind too much material off).

Crazy price for a little chunk of metal, imo. Not like this is a high tech piece of equipment. I think the lack of fine tuning could be mitigated with some feeler gauges. While I haven't done this, what I would do is put the feeler gauge under the body of the plane (between the referencing surface and plane body). Lower the blade so it bottoms out in your rabbit, and tighten it down. You've now lowered the blade the amount of the feeler gauge. lol just got to the part where you're shimming it with paper. Great minds!!
