14:40 the Veritas plane can be used as an open type plane. You just turn the blade & collar 180° & work the material from the opposite side. 😊

From my understanding, you can use the Stanley and Veritas router blades interchangeably.  The big advantage here, is yiumcan get the better Veritas blades and use them on your Stanley plane. That said, not much of an advantage using the older Stanley router blades on the newer Veritas plane. Cheers

Thanks for the review.  Veritas makes good tools with innovations over the traditional forms.  I’m quite happy with my Veritas plough plane.  When I started woodworking 10 years ago, I had never heard of Lee Valley or Veritas.  I had heard of Lie Nielsen and as such, got their router hand plane; been happy with it and see no reason to change.  However I suspect the Veritas is slightly better.

My understanding is that the open throat has two advantages. 1) greater visibility to see what you’re doing, and 2)they are less prone to clogging. The downside is there is no support to keep things flat and level ahead of the blade. So they added the support bar for applications where that was needed. The lie-Nielsen version comes in either open or closed throat variants.

Nice review.  Nice info.  Nice video.  Thank you

Thanks

I was just now thinking about buying the Veritas so your guidance was appreciated.  Plus, you teach amazingly well.  Thanks so much for your comparisons as well.  I've never been crazy about the Stanley and I think they're overpriced.  Thanks!

Thanks for the review, I enjoy your videos very much. I have Stanley Router Plane and have been looking at the Veritas.  I am going to get the Veritas Medium Router plane to handle some of my smaller joint tasks, and may consider stepping up their larger plane.
We seem to have a similar approach to woodworking, and I have a jointer’s bench very similar to the one you show outdoors.  I also have a traditional bench, with the shoulder vise, which I use quite often.  Cheers

Thank you for this review and comparison. Been pondering for the last two months what kind of router plane to buy. I'm gonna with the vintage ones first. Mostly because of money, Veritas is around ~200-220euros and comes with two blades (the box version with all the stuff is around 370euros) + shipping costs. Vintage Stanley #71 is around 50-100euros, depending on the condition and number of blades of course.
Maybe when I get more money from my works and truly need the Veritas precision, I get it. I mean, it's clearly worth the money and it's not THAT expensive that poor people like me couldn't buy it, eventually.

Very informative video.  Thank you.

Veritas has medium & small routers.  They don't have the screw adjustment, but the medium can use all the blades of the larger one.

I believe the angle degree of the curved fence is not the point.  The two points allow a pivot action while keeping the blade in contact with the wood.  The straight fence will cause the blad3 to lose contact as it moves around the curve.

see the foot on the router plane? (at 14:33) this is the 'why' for the smaller 'skate' on the stanley 55 combination plane, it adds support, as that plane (in moulding usage) has an open throat, like this router plane, so the 'presser foot' (to use a sewing machine term) stops the blade digging in too deep, ie to keep the blade angle, when starting the cut. the Stanley 55's skate is just a thinner version of this one.

Why not add the spring to older planes?

Thank you for the review.  I learned a lot.  I have an old Stanley router plane and the large Veritas model.  I'm slowly getting used to them both, slowly because a router plane isn't something I use daily or even weekly.  I have no comlaints with the Veritas, but it does take me a while to get it set up correctly, mainly due to lack of familiarity.  LOL Old school me, I bought the Veritas and the imperial cutters and made my own box for it.  It's the work of a minute to put an extension subbase on the Veritas and I use a wooden extension subbase to hold the Veritas to the side of the box for storage.   I'm struggling to get my head around the idea of a one millimeter cutter.  When would you use such a small cutter?

Nice Review.
Just one question: Can we use the Stanley blades on Veritas? They are very similar

Try the Record 071 - superior to both.

While a closed throat provides more stability, an open throat offers better visibility, but more importantly, it is preferable when creating stopped dados as a closed throat might damage the end of the dado.

Veritas- I wish they supplied them with a knurled screw to attach the fence, busting out a screw driver is a pain, everything else on the plane has a knurled screw 🤷‍♂️
If you ever do a stopped dado, the first time you bruise the closed end with a shaving from the Veritas you'll appreciate the open throat design of the Stanley. They both have their pros and cons, overall I actually prefer the Stanley with the larger sole tbh.
If I'm ever doing fine work I just reach for my medium or mini (it might look like a toy but it is a fully functional useful tool) Veritas planes.
🍻

I wish someone would sell a 3/16” or 5 mm thick steel plate about 4 inches by 8 inches with counter sunk screw holes that could attach to the bottom of the Veritas Router Plane when one wants a bigger base.
