I live in the US and even when this show was happening most people I know found it wasteful and basically viewed it as a sort of strange addiction like you mentioned. Also this show ended up hurting people who were legitimately using coupons for saving money because retailers had to tighten up all of the rules once they realized people were taking advantage of them like this.

The fact that these people could donate over half their stockpile to a food pantry, or a shelter and still have enough left to stock an entire grocery store is absolutely mad

I watched an episode where an extreme cuponer would put all the extra stuff in her garage on a shelf like a little store, and let people come and take what they needed as they needed it. No charge - just pay it forward is what she said.

That was freaking cool to see - and it still warms my heart when I think about it.

there was a lovely story on reddit about a guy whose girlfriend was an extreme couponer because she'd been poor growing up, and he was getting worried about her so he essentially held an intervention for her, and in the end she agreed to donate the majority of her stockpile that was just useless stuff she'd bought (like nappies when they didn't even have a baby) to a homeless shelter, and she eventually became a volunteer for the shelter using her eye for coupons to get them great deals on bulk buying food :)

The funny thing about this show is that practically every company stop making coupons no expiration date and lowered the value coupons so if people were to try this today wouldn’t really get much savings/deals

As someone with OCD, this is absolutely OCD. The level of planning, the backups and redundancies, the way her anxiety mounts when anything goes wrong, the sense that she's 'failed' if she doesn't get the best deals... it’s all textbook. Especially the fact that it was originally triggered by former irresponsible spending. I guarantee you that internally she's convinced if she 'lets herself get away with' not taking advantage of every deal, it'll be the first step on a slippery slope back towards financial irresponsibility.

I worked in retail for six years, them focusing on someone who is making 16 or 18 separate transactions and HER anxiety, I’m guessing the salesperson has twice as much anxiety than she does

When I was a cashier at Walmart, there were coupons that made us owe the customer money. I think the way that worked was if the coupons were a certain amount of money off an item. So say something is priced at $10 but the coupon for that product said "$20 off", the customer could get the item for free, and $10 cash LOL YOU'VE MUGGED ME, GIRLS!

In most places, stores won't allow this. The coupon rules have gotten strict and alot of manufacturers have moved onto digital coupons due to many people selling counterfeit coupons online. I first saw this show when my daughter was a toddler and was really interested in doing this to help save money but never came close to anything like this. Even working in retail for years I have never experienced anything like this.

I'm astounded how this 24-year-old manages to look like she's 44. I'm pretty sure those pearls are the worst part. Take away nan's pearls and go for different glasses and she already looks younger.

I used to coupon, but I never got as bad as these people, and I finally came to the realization that there was little to none nutritious food. I swelled to over 300lbs and my husband to over 400. I truly believe that these couponers never realized that there was no true healthy foods and the only good thing to come out of couponing was the paper goods.

Couponing to this extreme was rare even at the time the show was filmed, and many people in the US who were inspired by the show to try couponing were quickly disappointed when they realized most coupons didn't apply to the items they actually wanted/needed to purchase AND manufacturers/stores changed their coupon policies as a result of the show to make them less valuable, shorter expiration dates, quantity limits, and removing policies that allowed you to use duplicate coupons in a single transaction. I don't think most people could pull something like this off today.

i go to a public high school in the US. i don’t know anyone quite this bad the closet is a teacher of mine who goes either wednesday or thursday every week to coupon and get deals on food. the difference between her and the people on this show is that the food she buys never goes to waste as she brings her findings into school for her students because she never wants any of us to be sitting on her class hungry. she has explained to us many of times that she grew up less fortunate and she knows some of us are as well and she doesn’t want us to feel like she did. she coupons things like bread, peanut butter, jelly, bagels, etc… she does this for her students and she’s a great teacher and an even better person. love you Ms. T.

“I know, I’m going to clear the shelves of my local supermarket for giggles and the apocalypse I wouldn’t survive anyway. F everyone else”

Also - on the ‘this couldn’t happen in the UK’ - our general level of customer service would not accept this shit

This was literally my childhood. My dad use to do this, we would go to like 3 different grocery stores in one day based on the coupons. I remember a number of times that the store did give my dad money or he would pay like a $1... something. It is always stuff that is packaged goods. We always had stuff tucked away in different cabinets at home and old expired canned goods. I can say it did teach me it was a bit of a waste of time since you are driving all over the place for things that you didn't really need and where just storing.
