A doublet is always my go-to.  A good tuner is key, even with a balun.

Cebik had quite a few interesting articles. I have a doublet and love it.  instead of zip tying i just have notches cut in the plastic pipe and it holds the ladder line just fine!.Great video

Excellent mention of Cebik designs and his fondness for open wireline. I use 18 feet of 600 ohm open wire to an OCF, linear-loaded dipole. The longer vertical section goes up 30 feet and the shorter section goes off to a 4 foot high plastic fence post. Open wire connects to a robust 4:1 balun & is tuned by an old manual tuner. The 40m is just NVIS and 20-10m is DX.

This combines Cebik's "L" Antenna with DJ0IP's idea of using 40% feedpoint for a 40m  OCF dipole. Then, I  added the linear loading to keep the length compact enough to get that 40% feedpoint;  I just put all three ideas together and now just tune once per band change on the manual tuner. OCF's can radiate along the feedline but I try to keep it centered between the long & short legs.

It is an 8-band portable antenna if one includes the 11 meter CB band. I guess it could even be used on a military or MARS frequency in some dire emergency.  ❤

Great video, and I love the explanation you did for those who aren't familiar with the Doublet. I built one a few years ago for 160m (I won't do that again), and it was fantastic...to a point. The nulls you mentioned can be very hard to deal with, and it was so bad on 20m, I had to quit running it as I couldn't hear the midwest but had a really good signal into Texas, which I never understood. I considered cutting it down and doing the Broadside Doublet that you did, making 20m my highest frequency, but I haven't brought myself to put a tuner back on my desk again.

Ok, Tim, you sent me down the research rabbit hole of ladder line. From my research, which brought back memories of studying for my first licence, it's recommended to give ladder line a slight twist every two or three feet to reduce noise, use 10 feet or less of coax to the tuner to reduce extreme losses along the coax and use 450 ohm line to reduce losses.

Excellent work and great information. 5watts and a great antenna will outperform a QRO rig with a terrible antenna any day of the week.
