Anchovies are called by different names depending on the season and size they are caught, but the undisputed best among them is the 'Semyeol' caught in the autumn.

Workers setting out to catch these Semyeol!

A vessel speeding through the dark sea to catch these nocturnal anchovies.

As soon as the veteran captain with 30 years of experience rings the bell upon arriving at the anchovy fishing grounds, the crew members all become busy.

This is because the anchovy fishing season has begun in earnest.

The task of dropping the enormous anchor weighing 1.2 tons, throwing buoys into the sea, and casting the long net, which is about 120 meters long, is carried out under tension.

They say they must be extremely careful, as getting one's foot caught in the net could even result in loss of life.

Since they have to wait about two hours after lowering the net, this is the only time the crew takes a short break. Two hours later, they haul up a massive net that doubles in weight upon contact with water. However, contrary to the crew's expectations, the catch is meager and filled only with unwanted fish.

Eventually, they find themselves having to discard all the anchovies they worked so hard to catch.

They change their fishing location and cast the net again!

Once the desired amount of anchovies is caught, the next task follows without a moment's rest.

Because anchovies are so impatient that they die immediately after being caught, they are boiled right on board to maintain freshness.

From as short as two nights and three days to as long as a week...

The crew members must fill all 3,000 boxes to return to port, yet they haven't met their catch target yet... Will they be able to return with a full catch?

Anchovy fishing boats do not return to land unless they catch the target amount once they set out.

They have already been living at sea for four days. With no anchovies being caught, they had cast and hauled nets countless times; to make matters worse, strong winds and rain began to blow, causing the boat to rock violently.

The crew members are so disoriented that it is difficult to even conduct an interview.

However, they cannot stop fishing operations because they must work according to the sea's time, not human schedules.

As they vigorously pull up a net weighing over 1 ton, it is filled with high-quality anchovies, free from any unwanted fish.

These anchovies are all transported to a processing plant for drying, a process that is equally demanding.

All non-anchovy bycatch must be separated, and the fish must be sorted by size; since this task cannot be aided by machinery, it is entirely done by hand.

This report introduces the hard work of the laborers who add tens of thousands of touches to bring these anchovies to the consumer's table.
