Documentary Day 3: "Don't Cry, Mackerel - Busan Joint Fish Market"
Late at night, the mackerel war begins. When a boat loaded with freshly caught mackerel arrives at the dock, tens of thousands of mackerel are transported and sorted. Approximately 1,000 people are mobilized for this process. This is the Busan Joint Fish Market, where 90% of mackerel caught along Korea's coasts is first traded.
As the birthplace of the national fish, this place is reminiscent of a battlefield. At 6 a.m., the auction bell rings throughout the fish market, and the relay auction begins, creating a spectacle of thousands of people moving around the mackerel. After fierce price competition among wholesalers, the national fish, mackerel, is transported across the country and finally reaches its destination, the table. The Busan Joint Fish Awards is a place where people share both joy and sorrow over mackerel.
● Tears of the National Fish
This is the time when mackerel is plump and deliciously oily. It is truly the peak season for mackerel. But the people at the joint fish market, who should be bustling with excitement, are sighing more deeply than ever. Mackerel catches have dropped by 17%, leaving supplies desperately short, yet prices continue to fall.
This is because, following the Fukushima nuclear accident, fears of radiation have led consumers to turn away from fish. The Busan Joint Fish Market conducts radiation tests on all incoming fish. Mackerel, a staple of the common people's diet for many years, is truly safe from radiation?
● The Sea of Life
A single mackerel passes through countless hands before it reaches our tables. At 10 p.m., people wearing boots and heading to the fish market stand out. They are unloading, transporting, and sorting the mackerel before the auction. Women who spent their precious days sorting millions of mackerel every day, and grandfathers whose sole livelihood is transporting mackerel and ice. When a boat loaded with mackerel pulls into the dock, the fierce sea of their lives unfolds before us.
