I don’t think people fully realize how valuable it is to have two experienced, airline certified flight instructors sharing their aviation knowledge here for free. Thank you both so much for taking the time to share your experience with us through this incredible podcast.

Petter wants to spend vacation in shorts, then come home and make more Shorts. Truly a man committed to keeping things brief: the pants, the videos, and hopefully the lifespan of misinformation.

17:30 The accident Petter is referencing here is Southern Airways flight 242 - A dc-9 en route from Huntsville to Atlanta that lost engines in hail and crashed on the highway near New Hope Georgia in 1977. This one hits really close to home, as a lifelong Georgia resident. We studied this one in my Aviation Meteorology class at UGA, and my classmate from New Hope did a retrospective interviewing residents of the area about their experiences during and after the incident. She even spoke first hand to some residents who ran to help at the scene. It was a very sobering project to hear from her, and I'll never forget that one.

55:30 Great example. QF32 is an ideal case of the opposite from the question asked. QF32 typically flew with 3 pilots. A Captain, First Officer and either a Second Officer (acting as relief crew) or a relief First Officer.

It was amazing that particular flight involved the annual route check of the P.I.C (Captain Crespigny) by a Qantas Check Captain, further more and most unlikely was the Check Captain was also being evaluated by a Qantas Senior Check-Captain. Those two additional pilots (regardless of there experience, which im sure certainly helped) but simply having two more pilots there allowed the P.I.C to triage and designate tasks that all members of the crew were capable of doing, which was so critical with literly hundreds of warning messages backed up.

For those unfamiliar with the details of that flight I've pasted some information below.

Standard + Extra Crew:
•Captain Richard Champion de Crespigny -  Pilot in Command (PIC), undergoing his annual route check.
•First Officer Matt Hicks
•Second Officer Mark Johnson - Relief pilot (standard for long-haul A380 operations)
•Check Captain Harry Wubben - Conducting the line check on Captain de Crespigny.
•Senior Check Captain David Evans - Overseeing/evaluating the Check Captain as part of the process to ensure check captains remain competent.

Captain de Crespigny himself highlighted how this extra expertise was invaluable. They divided tasks effectively. Senior Check Captain Evans handled complex performance calculations for an overweight landing with multiple system failures. The crew's deep experience and strong Crew Resource Management (CRM) played a huge role in managing the cascading issues from the uncontained engine failure.

Qantas has operated hundreds of thousands of flights, and only a tiny fraction involve active line checks, let alone a senior check captain overseeing the checker. The fact that this ultra-experienced team (combined ~140 years in aviation and ~71,000 flight hours) was present during one of Qantas's rarest serious incidents in modern times is remarkable.

Canadian ATPL-A holder here.

There's no skill test for the Canadian ATPL. Getting to 1500 hours is considered sufficient demonstration of skill.

This guy, from what I understand, held an ATPL-H. The ATPL for helicopter pilots, and never converted it to an ATPL-A. Whether it was an oversight that no one noticed, or deliberate fraud remains to be seen.

I have a Canadian ATPL

It is 2 written exams and NO skill test at all
1500 hours and several other sub sets of hours like night PIC and instrument but NO skill test at all

There was also that crash in Mexico in 2008, a Learjet 45 carrying the Secretary of the Interior, where NEITHER pilot was properly certified to fly the Learjet. It’s an example of how bad things can go when you’re not going through the correct channels or taking the correct steps.

With regards to ATPL course, it has come to a point that the useful knowledge you get from the course and what is being asked in an exam is so far apart, that you are basically setting yourself for exam failure if you don't extensively practice the question bank. Currently studying for my exams, and the process of going through all of those questions that seem like they are made to trick you into choosing a false answer, rather than a well thought-of question, is very infuriating. Hopefully training after that makes more sense.

It took me way to long to understand i didn't miss the puppy video. Papi.... haha

Ben, the flight desk may be symmetrical, but your eyes are not (comment about right seat to left seat). You have a dominant eye. Extend both arms fully forward. Make a triangle with your index fingers and thumbs, index's up and thumbs level. With both eyes open, put a very distant object in the triangle, maybe 10 or 15 meters away. Close 1 eye, then the next. The eye that keeps the object in the triangle is your dominant eye.

There is also a B52 at the aircraft museum at Darwin Airport in Australia.

🎈Hello Petter!🎈  🎈Hello Ben!🎈
It's lovely to hear from you both again! 🎶

Puppies? What puppies? Oohh, the PAPI's !!

Your knowledge and way of communication never cease to impress me! Can't wait for your next podcast, Petter and Ben❣️

Thank you for your podcast.  As a physicist I really enjoy both the podcast and the Mentour pilot episodes.  You explain the physics of flying so well that I wish I could use parts of your episodes with my students.  Unfortunately they are not easy to translate to Serbian language.  Greetings from a physics teacher from Belgrade.

49:17 I really felt the happiness of Petter hearing that the PAPI Video made a lot of pilots now recognize the topic and so i assume will start to work out additional slices for the swiss cheese model to bring in another layer of security. So all in all, congratulations you and the team made the world a better place!

just to add to petter and bens discussion on the atpl theory, theyre spot on. right now ive passed 8/13 with over 93 average and i still remember in pof for example one question was asking about angle of attack the answer was the angle between the speed vector and xy plane of symmetry, similarly in human performance and limitations, its always the grapes and the diameter of droplet from nasal spray is 7-12 micrometers. its daft

Well done.  Very good information. Please keep going with your podcast. Really likes it.

Hey Ben! Kissimmee Florida? That's where I live! We're quite proud of our sweet little executive airport. As much as I would have liked to have met you, thank you for not crashing here! :face-red-heart-shape:

An hour with 2 of my favorite people? Don’t threaten me with a great time! 🥰 glad to hear that the Pope’s flight crew was so safety minded and I agree with you it should be highlighted as a great thing by the media if you cancel a flight for safety, it should NEVER be seen as a problem / PR Disaster! If you’re able to, please plant some Forget - Me - Not flowers for EVERYONE who was lost in an aviation crash and their families
