"only needed four shield changes"
I think what might have happened is that the game counted "no shield" as a shield state, so the first shield obtained in that minigame counted as a shield change.

Seeing that Michael Jackson achievement immediately made me go, "What, how is that even possible??"

I think the "Level select blocks achievements" means you can't get others while the level select menu is available

Probably because it's where you access debug mode which would make it way too easy for the other achievements

14:48  “WHAT DO YOU MEAN? I’M DEAD.”

The “chrome gadget zone! Fuck!” Got me 💀

What about Sonic CD?
also a little funny joke:
1:09 "Sorry if the footage looks pixelated"
my brother in Light Gaia, the entire fucking game is 16 bits.

i still often think about how Sonic 3 was the one video game that taught me to properly distinguish between left & right

14:50 professional sonicologist here, I have a hypothesis. When you spindash, sometimes if you hit a wall you will stand up. The spikes were justtttt high enough for you to hit, but not for you to stand under. When you stood up, the spikes crushed you because of that few pixel difference.

16:32 the bottom of that platform looks electrified

The reason you had to reset after activating level select is because the flag that says "level select is in use" is what blocks all the other achievements. That flag is what allows the menu to show the "SOUND TEST" option as well as enabling a few in-game features immediately (such as exiting the course from pause, as well as possibly the ability to advance one frame at a time), and the only way to kick the game back out of this state is to reset it entirely. Why this blocks them is simply that their check is summed up as "I'm earned if the player does this, unless the 'level select is on' flag is set".

21:12 Brain aneurysms, if untreated, lead to strokes, if they don't outright kill you beforehand. So, yes, you can in fact "combine" them.

Seeing you play Sonic 2 with achievements and now with Sonic 3 and Knuckles makes me think that you must have a death wish!

16:33 That’s not you getting crushed. That’s you hitting the electrical bottom of the platform

4:00 Last emerald in c a r n i v a l  night zone!

14:46 had me crying. The delivery was flawless.

"This was pain, because you go Super when having over 50 rings and double-jump, so no Tails flight"
Or... you could do it in a file that doesn't have all the Emeralds collected. Gets around that issue pretty easily.

And this is why you need to use the ps3 save system on the genesis collection

Micheal jackson style is a wild achievment.
