regardless of what people think of it, it was just a smart idea of Mamdani to not attend

'Fashion is art and should be funded' and 'The Met Gala is out of touch, makes bad art, and is funded by psychopaths' are two thoughts that can co-exist.

The optics of the wealthy supporting art can be frustrating, but being 'anti-art' as a form of protest is a losing game.

Rich people ruined art like they ruin everything 🎉

Someone please make concept art for Hasan's future Met costume

It sucks that The Met is seen as a an entity meant for a wealthy suck fest when it’s a prominent presence in the art world and fashion, I also wish the gala wasn’t sponsored and run by rich oligarchs either. bc at the end of the day we all know they don’t care at all about supporting creativity or art for anyone but themselves.

The Dua Lipa pic was AI she did not attend the met this year.

The Dua Lipa photo is AI btw, she didn’t attend

Bruh...
Nothing stifles art more than being a wage slave.

I like the screen wall with Amazon workers protesting, that's art.🎨

as someone who works in hair and makeup, it’s so difficult for me because whilst i see it as as an extravagant display it also employs so many people in my industry every year.

The bottles of pee everywhere was f'ing brilliant! 🖕🏽 Bezos!

Two things can be true. It sucks that this is among the most gatekept forms of art under capitalism, so looking at it can be infuriating. But also, this community does have a bunch of dudes whose taste doesn't include any femme shit.

being a fashion-obsessed hasanabi head is not for the weak. everyone in chat during this was an opp

0:50 "the devil boycotts prada"

9:22 valid crashout 😅 But damn my ears... don't use headphones

As a Colombian mural artist (an extremely difficult field to make money in), I have always believed that where your money comes from — and who buys your work — is just as important as the work itself. My entire life, I have rejected offers from drug traffickers to paint murals of Pablo Escobar, or from far-right politicians — which, in this country, is basically the same thing as narcos.

Art belongs to the public, and because of that, cases like these “monetary contributions” from Jeff Bezos make no sense to me. He and others like him are simply trying to whitewash their image.

Fashion is good and fine but it's like any other aspect of culture and art, it rises out of the lived experiences, ideas, aspirations, hopes, and perceptions of people and is most vital when responsive and relevant those things, which the MET gala feels fundamentally disconnected from. There is a non negligible element to the met gala that isn't about about fashion as art but is about membership to an elite club and display of that status - why else are the guests pretty much decided by whoever is in the in group, whoever was chosen for the current box office movie, just flat out any billionaire, etc. Once that becomes the major and not the minor guiding factor for it,  it becomes irrelevant and not very valuable at best, and at worst a propagator of celebrity/bourgeois worship, a false illusory culture of values decided by the powerful. Who can do and make art that is seen en masse in our society is pretty sequestered to whoever capital/the industry allows. That doesn't mean there's not a ton of art that is valuable and worthwhile, it just means there's a gap between that activity of inherent value and what is massively circulated and commercially prevails

I think part of the problem is the fact that art as a concept is “understood” by everyone but hard to explain.

So yes the arts have been greatly performed, by those who have the time to explore them without having to worry about keeping a roof over their head, or if they will have a next meal, but that does not negate the fact art is universal and not held back by morality.

As well that does not exclude the art produce by people in less advantageous positions but sadly, it rarely gains the notoriety it deserves.

OK... I'll come to the defense of the Met Gala.
It benefits the Costume Institute, a part of the NY Metropolitan Museum of Art.
It was made for and by the wealthy and famous (especially the New York Wealthy) and was ALWAYS underwritten each year by a famous global fashion house.  Always fluffy, edgy, ridiculous and ultimately harmless.
Until this year - when Met Gala Chair Anna Wintour allowed Jeff Bezos and his wife to elbow their way in.
They have nothing to do with the fashion industry or frankly creativity in any way - so it was obviously about their money.
Historically almost every year has a controversy, but, this year in particular dragged Bezos' oligarch baggage into the mix.
A strong reason to condemn and ignore it.
