Rulesets change but great terrain  endures.

Fully painted armies battling on fully done terrain is my peak wargaming experience.

I have a feeling that as prices go up and value goes down people will start to go back to crafting things like terrain and even minis. I'm looking forward to people taking back the hobby and our imaginations.

There was room in the economy at my after-school job to buy a Bambu Lab X1 Carbon last year, and it's been a huge success to print Brite Minis, crates and barrels at 200% scale and introducing 6-7-year-olds to a simplified version of One Page Rules. The freedom to scale has made it easier to introduce painting to a younger audience and they've really enjoyed scratch-building a few ruins as well.

I've since gotten permission to print for myself as long as I pay for the filament, and I've had a great time lately painting post-apocalyptic barricades and some awesome cracked asphalt roads by Printable Scenery. I'm also looking a lot at EC3D Design on MyMiniFactory, lots of cool files to explore for OPR, Zone Wars and Fallout Factions when I eventually get the new starter set.

The bambu printers make this look so easy its more and more tempting every year. The sheer variety of choice is tantalizing

I've been scratch-building terrain for quite a while, until my gaming buddies and I recently purchased Bambu Lab A1 for our gaming group's terrain needs. To be fair, it feels like a hobby life before and after. The pivoting moment for me personally was when I realised HOW MUCH TIME it takes to scratch build good-looking terrain. I agree that it has its moments, it's fun and self-inspiring, but when you have to do terrain for multiple game systems, you may start to burn out quite quickly, unless you feel really passionate about it, and you enjoy the whole process. Another thing is the amount of mess the process of scratch-building creates: leftovers from XPS sheets, coffee sticks, chipboard, etc.
I have a good experience with FDM printing from years ago, when I purchased the Anycubic I3 Mega. It is still operational, works quite well, but damn, you had to do some tinkering, not only in CURA settings, but hardware-wise as well! And with 60 mm/s printing speed being kinda optimal, it actually took a lot of time to print anything relatively big with 0.2 layer height.
This Bambu Lab A1 is a pretty much "plug&play" printer. Very fast and reliable.
I have 230 hrs of active printing last month, and 160 hrs this month, the printer works like a wonder.

Now, for me, I scratchbuild, because that's my favourite part of the process. Especially once the primer layer goes on and it all becomes a coherent whole. The painting... not so much. It's best to use the method that caters to the bit you enjoy the most, and if that's painting, then printed terrain is great. It's also great for rapidly filling a table in a hurry.

I'm a scratch builder, mostly fantasy/medieval/tudor style/themed. i wish had space for a 3d printer for things like window/door frames.

I've been printing for years now! It's astounding to me how many people are still discovering it and acting like it's some sort of new magic. Welcome, your enthusiasm as a newbie keeps me humbled and reminded of how much freedom being a printer hobbyist has given me in the tabletop gaming arena! I'm glad more and more people are finding this freedom as well!

You can also combine terrain and greebly STLs in the slicer to then print all at once, and export as one STL for later.

I've been printing modular terrain called Realm Tiles. It's fantasy-focused at the moment for TTRPG dungeons/castles, but I've been modding/kitbashing scifi stuff for it. It's basically built around grids, tiles, and walls so it's easy to store, too.

I don't play tabletop but I like to put small terrain pieces on my miniature display shelves to add a little spice. I've got a lot of stuff from Etsy. Broken crumbled walls, crates and barrels, spiky barricades, poison mushrooms, alien obelisks, etc. You can get stuff like that and larger for a pretty decent price. Some of it has obvious print lines, but it's just decoration so it's not that noticeable.

I'm not willing to do the actual printing myself, so I've found some local hobbyists who do 3d commission printing. They charge the cost of materials, plus a little extra for their time. End result is I get stuff for way lower cost, and they get to profit a bit from their hobby. Win win.

Found some great folding/popout ruins, that are pre-sliced for multi-color printing. I think the creator was TinkerJunkies, and few others also doing folding terrain.  folds & puts away nicely into a bookshelf

I definitely assumed space and cost was the thing stopping me from getting a 3D printer but honestly the better and more accessible the tech has gotten, the more I'm interested.

I like CGL's folding cardboard stock terrain. Easy to fold into place. Sturdy enough and looks nice on their map sheets. Took me 20min to put it all together and use.

Resin griblies + FDM big blocks is the total cheat-code.

It lets you merge kits in a coherent way. Just make sure the griblies are all over and the same style.

But the greatest thing about printing is “need one more of this piece? Send it to the printer”.
For immersive narrative games you sometimes need a few specific variants of terrain. If you build with kits you need a whole kit just to get a part. With printing the only real challenge is where to store it all when not on the table.
