Joshua Cochran, curator for American history and diplomacy at the Beinecke Library, reflects on the exhibition, “Unfurling the Flag: Reflections on American Patriotism,” which is on view at the library through Sunday, September 27.

In considering how the social contract might evolve in the coming 250 years, the exhibition unfurls the flag of patriotism to consider its nuanced character. A flag unfurled is a symbol of an imagined political community united around a common cause, shared values, and ideas. But the exhibition recognizes, too, that an unfurled flag is also exposed, laying bare its imperfections, fraying and fading, or repaired, while continuing to represent a set of aspirational ideas.

Mondays at Beinecke online talks focus on materials from the collections and include an opening presentation at 4pm followed by conversation and Q & A beginning about 4:30pm until 5pm. Episodes are generally recorded and published on the library's YouTube channel within a few weeks of the original live program.
