Mass Effect's Renegade Shepard Isn't Actually Evil

Socrates Reborn

Is Renegade Shepard actually evil… or just the only person in the room willing to make the really ugly decisions?

Today, we’re putting Commander Shepard on trial and examining what Renegade actually means, the state of the galaxy, Paragon Shepard’s suspiciously clean reputation, and the Illusive Man's alleged problem.

Anderson: "I understand you have to blew up the batarian Relay to stop the Reapers, Shepard."

Shepard: "...Reapers?"

Renegade Shep summed up in a single sentence: "We don't have time for this idiot, CHARGE!"

[Paragon]
"Let's talk better relations!"
[Renegade]
"Kill the bastards."

"You can't bludgeon through bureaucracy."

“Report back to the ship. We’ll bang, Okay.”

The brainrot I grew up on and if you know what it’s from you’re an OG.

I will always cherish the moment you throw that Eclipse down the building and Jack says she has a lot to learn from you

Renegade Commander Shepherd would not have been traumatized by that one kid blowing up in a shuttle.

One of my favorite Renegade lines is from FemShep to Harkin in the first game when he attempts to hit on her. "I'd rather drink a cup of acid after chewing on a razor blade."

As Garrus put it 'ruthress calculous of war' to save 20 million lives here, one might have to sacrifice 10 million there. He never asked to end either. He was dumped into that position, by people who largely didn't even believe him, until the reapers started eating their faces, no less.

That’s why the word “renegade” is used, not “evil”

I never saw Renegade Shepard as evil, i always saw Renegade Shepard as pretty realistic.

Sounds like the galaxy owes my boy Renegade Shepherd an apology 😭

People go so far out of their way to skate past any form of nuanced decision (admittedly not their full fault since the game punishes you for not going at least 80% one or the other) that lots of people genuinely think going Renegade means locking yourself down a route of murdering your friends for no reason... When largely you have to go out of your way to make the stupidest decisions possible to earn those outcomes.

Renegade Shepard gets some of the best moments and dialogue in the series, if you haven't done so yet, you owe yourself at least one playthrough of it.

One thing that I noticed watching old movies is that renegade Shepard is pretty much every single movie action hero rolled into one.

Just watch the original street fighter live action movie, and you'll realize Van Damme is an exacto copy of renegade shepard
