We continue the Apron & Stem saga with Part 2 where Pioneer Sailing Trust's boat builder and restorer Alan and the apprentices, explain and show us their method for laminating the Apron using a Jig piece, and then using the Apron to help with laminating the Stem.
Join Alan and the apprentices as they race against the epoxy clock during the 32-layer laminating process and prove teamwork truly does make the dreamwork in the boat restoration industry!
Alan also explains his method for avoiding a sticky situation with the Jig by using numbered wooden blocks covered in parcel tape to stop the glue from sticking to the Jig and the Cramps used in the drying process. The blocks also help hold the Apron shape providing an even-spread across the area with the help of the Cramps.
Watch as the apprentices work together to move all 32-layers carefully onto the Jig to get the Apron in the correct shape before moving onto the Stem and facing the risky dilemma of deciding whether to laminate the whole Stem in one piece or in two parts...
Will they run out of Epoxy glue before the end? Will they make it to lunch? Put the kettle on, put your feet up, and watch now to find out!
With massive thanks to National Lottery Heritage Fund and the National Lottery players for help supporting our heritage projects.
