KAROO is a half-decked centreboard yacht designed by Cliff Gale and built by Bill Fisher of La Perouse in 1930. A replica named YEROMAIS was built by Stephen Gale Cliff's Grandson in 1985, but the original KAROO still exists. It had a varied life which this video talks about, but at the moment KAROO is being restored by shipwright Joe Street at his home on the Central Coast of NSW. This is an important boat as these boats were very common on Sydney Harbour 100 years ago but very few have survived. Joe has re-ribbed KAROO with steam-bent Spotted Gum, repaired the Huon Pine planking and is currently re-fitting the stringers before putting a new deck on. It's a part-time activity for Joe, but within a few years he'll have her sailing again and in top condition. Ian Smith of the Sydney Wooden Boat School visits Joe and checks out KAROO.
