The FE 400 F4.5 and FE 600 F6.3 GM primes offer lightweight, and more affordable, alternatives to the FE 400mm F2.8 and FE 600mm F4 G-Master primes. Weighing in at less than 1 k / 2.2 lbs (without the lens hood and lens foot attached) they are just 1/3 of the weight of their larger cousins. They are also much lighter and more compact than FE 100-400 F4.5 GM and FE 200-600 G telephoto zooms. For those photographers who are prepared to use teleconverters and/or APS-C/S35 mode to fine-tune their angle-of-view, they offer yet more choice for photographers interested in wildlife or fast action sports photography.
This lens review looks at competing lenses from both Sony and other manufacturers and strives to help Alpha photographers make a more informed purchasing decision when choosing a telephoto lens.
