How do you frame a bird about to take off?
How do you adjust settings based on the lighting and the subject's movement?
In this video, I paired the Sony α7 V with the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS and FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS to photograph wild birds, insects, and plants.
Mixing both tripod and handheld shooting, I’ll share the joy of super-telephoto photography through my POV screen recordings and actual sample shots.
I’ll walk you through AF tracking during bird take-offs and bathing, selecting focus areas based on the number and position of birds, and adjusting shutter speed and ISO while monitoring brightness and action. I explain exactly what I'm looking at and how I make decisions on the spot.
Discover the brightness and soft bokeh of the 400mm, and how the 600mm captures feathers, water droplets, and detailed eye patterns up close. Utilizing water reflections, bokeh balls, and foreground blur, I'll introduce the unique scenery captured by each lens.
Between searching for birds, I also aimed my lenses at butterflies, dragonflies, and tiny insects at my feet. By switching to Insect Recognition AF and aiming for the eyes with a small focus area, I discovered the fun of shooting usually overlooked subjects with a super-telephoto lens.
I also talk about the challenge of finding subjects with a 600mm, the pure impact when you finally spot them, and the handling experience of using both lenses in the field.
The weight of the lenses is approx. 994g for the 400mm and 995g for the 600mm (*1). Both are under 1kg without the tripod mount, making them the world's lightest (*2) in their respective classes of G Master super-telephoto prime lenses.
From on-the-spot decisions to the final sample shots, please enjoy this super-telephoto experience with the α7 V and these two lenses until the very end!
