Fascinating peek into J.S. Connors. I was never a huge tennis fan, but always watched the U.S. Open, Wimbledon, and some others. In 1980, I was living in Boston, and they had a tournament at the Longwood Cricket Club in Brookline not that far from where I lived. I had never seen a pro tennis tournament in person, and went specifically to watch Conners play. I was not disappointed to say the least. It was instantly obvious that this guy was playing a much different game than anybody else there. He would take that ball on the rise and pound it back so hard and deep into the opponent's court that it was breathtaking to watch. What a talent and a unique competitive personality to go with it.

I have to say it. Ivan Lendl is one of the iconic all time great players of the History. However, his comments sound like some narcissistic disorder is at play. His wording of his tactical plan against Connors is accurate, I saw it happening. Lendl’s plan worked but he needed to add to the context. Connors’s best year, when his body was moving seemingly effortlessly was in 1974. He didn’t show any sign of physically wearing down. That can be seen on YouTube in the 1976 US OPEN (har tru) final against Bjorn Borg. Ivan Lendl’s best year started about 1986. That’s when his improved diet and confidence really revealed itself. That is TWELVE YEARS after Jimmy Connors’s best year. I’ll say it again. TWELVE YEARS. Lendl learned to give no pace, lengthen the rallies, until the Connors’s impatience caused errors. No secret there. A much younger Connors would undoubtedly be more competitive. If Lendl is going to speak so matter of fact and literal, he should show respect and give the whole context.
