Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, The Bad Guys, TMNT, Wild Robot, and K-Pop Demon Hunters use that animation incredibly well by making it their own thing

If I had a nickel for every time someone said “Spider-Verse style” I could create my own animation studio

And yet, we somehow will never get a Batman beyond movie in that style. DAMN YOU WARNER BROS!!!!!

It’s like the thing syndrome said: “And when everyone is super…nobody will be”

My only problem is when it looks un-rendered and unfinished but isn’t purposefully a bit ugly. Like mutant mayhem was purposefully ugly and scrappy and it looked cool. The Smurfs looked unfinished. And I’m not surprised people are switching up on it like they did with nano tech and say it’s overused even tho it no longer being new doesn’t make it worse

The Spider-verse animation style works in Spider-verse because there's INTENT. Example being the animators picking specific frame rates for animating Miles in the first movie before and after he hones his powers. When studios copy the style they're copying it without understanding why it works and instead do it "because it will appeal to general audiences".

3:37 KLAUS SHOUT OUT, that movie is sick as heck

I feel like the most IMPORTANT thing about this style is that u can’t just copy and paste it and expect it to
Work because “it’s the new trend.” You have to make it unique to the story your trying to tell. Last wish looked like a picture book type style, wild robot took that and made it even better, mutant mayhem made it look dirtier to make it seem like the turtles drew the art themselves, kpop demon hunters used it to where it may be a similar style but it’s one that at least stands out on its own along with ultraman rising, and then u have killer of killers which makes it look like the concept art coming to life.

K-pop demon hunters was such an unexpected hit. I think the passion from the creators is very evident and the style is unique and individual.

I am not surprised that the Smurfs movie didn't do too well because I literally only saw one random ad about that movie,  and that just tells me all I need.

3:01 Well deserved to the Spider-Man win because Incredibles 2 honestly had such a messy script

the thing that people neglect to talk about in regards to spiderverse is that everything ELSE about the movie is phenomenal. the script is insanely tight, the voice acting is immaculate, the music is insane, and the overall story is just crazily well written. so often both the public and the industry's takeaways from the first spiderverse are so skin deep and the conversation ends at the animation. theres so much more to that movie that makes it a masterpiece when you take away how it looks and it makes me really upset when people only focus on that one part of it

Bro the K-pop demon hunters ragebait thumbnail worked💀💀

TF one failed due to marketing. That first trailer made it seem like a wildly different type of film. It came across as something aimed at minions fans rather than a story about dissolution with government and the breakdown of friendship. That and they released the film in the us and then the rest of the world slowly like we've travelled back in time to the 80s

9:01 What I find even more hilarious about this choice is that Deadpool & Wolverine shouted out how overused this concept is and they still decided to use it.

They forgot story is important too not just the animation

Warner Bros, why won’t we ever get a Batman Beyond movie with that style? Come on! 😡

Props to Ryan gosling to standing perfectly still this whole video

TF1 is great, art direction and all, the marketing REALLY sabotaged the film

I personally think it's great that studios are taking risks with animation rather than sticking to the twenty something year old standardized style the industry had set, animation is limitless, you can tell any story you want through it whether it's a family movie or a more mature one in tone. The problem, as Andy said, is not the "stylized trend" itself and studios hopping in to do it as well, that's actually rather neat, but instead that they're doing it with no reason in mind at all. That they're doing it because the animation style is what is getting butts in seats rather than good stories to tell. The animation style should be directly linked to the story being told, such as Spiderverse having literal comic panels, Kpop Demon Hunters having amazing fashion and great music, or Mitchells Vs The Machines since the main character is supposed to be a quirky film major and sees the world in such a way. Smurfs may look a certain way but people can still see through it and see that there's no story there more than just another big studio cash grab.
